Описание: Why do some primate groups have only one adult male, monopolizing several females, whereas in others, several males live side by side with several females? What are the consequences for male-female relationships and the evolution of mating systems? This book uses both fieldwork and theory to unravel this complex issue.

Описание: Intended as a sequel to "Primate Societies", this book compiles thirty-one chapters that review the state of knowledge regarding the behavior of nonhuman primates. It includes chapters that are organized around four major adaptive problems primates face as they strive to grow, maintain themselves, and reproduce in the wild.

Описание: The Handbook of Primate Behavioral Management (HPBM) fills a void in the scientific literature, providing those who work with nonhuman primates (NHP) with a centralized reference for many issues related to the care and management of captive nonhuman primates. While there are numerous publications scattered throughout the literat

Описание: Written for students and researchers interested in how primates, including ourselves, evolved, Primate and Human Evolution explores evolutionary anthropology from a broad comparative perspective, and presents a new model of human origins that does not depend solely on global climatic change.

Описание: This volume reviews the broad topic of welfare in nonhuman primates under human care. Chapters detail the history of primates in captivity, ethical and legal issues surrounding the use of nonhuman primates as entertainment or in research, the different approaches that welfare are measured, and how housing, enrichment, and other conditions can foster or degrade welfare. Since humans began keeping nonhuman primates we have made vast strides in understanding their cognitive abilities, strong social bonds, vibrant personalities, and their capacity for joy and suffering. With an increasing number of countries banning the use of great apes in biomedical research, the welfare of primates in zoos and research facilities has gained increasing attention. This interdisciplinary work features contributors from many of the fields involved and those on both sides of the issue, thus providing an exhaustive overview of primate welfare. Readers from animal welfare science, primatology, animal testing, veterinary medicine, conservation to ethics and legislation will find this an important account.

Описание: The first book to provide a broad comparison of skeletal and dental anatomy in subadult primates. With hundreds of anatomical illustrations and detailed descriptions, it is a valuable resource for students and researchers in the fields of biological anthropology, anatomy, primatology, growth and development, dental biology, and veterinary medicine.
Описание: Despite many encouraging developments in the field of animal-free technologies, well-defined animal models are still needed to study fundamental properties of human diseases and to develop new prophylactic and therapeutic treatments against human diseases. Non-human primates (NHP) make up only a small, but important, part of the total number of animals used in biomedical and preclinical research. Due to their close phylogenetic relationship and the shared susceptibility to many human diseases, NHP can provide important research models to study these diseases and, as such, play a critical role in the advancement of various areas in the medical field. Studies in NHP have contributed to our understanding of various diseases and fundamental biological phenomena and they continue to be important in the development of new therapies, treatments, drugs and vaccines. Moreover, NHP models also contribute to our general knowledge of the processes that underlie non-disease and disease conditions. Important areas where NHP can provide important information include (emerging) infectious diseases, organ transplantation, neurological and aging-related disorders. Although not covered in this book due to time constraints, the need for, and benefits of, NHP models has been demonstrated most recently in the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic. The present book is the second of two volumes and covers important disease areas where NHP are used as model species. This volume includes different chapters on NHP models in infectious diseases, aging, neurodegenerative disorders, organ transplantation and cancer.
