Описание: "America had a secret weapon," writes Steve Call of the period immediately following September 11, 2001, as planners contemplated the invasion of Afghanistan. This weapon consisted of small teams of Special Forces operatives trained in close air support (CAS) who, in cooperation with the loose federation of Afghan rebels opposed to the Taliban regime, soon began achieving impressive-and unexpected-military victories over Taliban forces and the al-Qaeda terrorists they had sponsored. The astounding success of CAS tactics coupled with ground operations in Afghanistan soon drew the attention of military decision makers and would eventually factor into the planning for another campaign: Operation Iraqi Freedom. But who, exactly, are these air power experts and what is the function of the TACPs (Tactical Air Control Parties) in which they operate? Danger Close provides a fascinating look at a dedicated, courageous, innovative, and often misunderstood and misused group of military professionals. Drawing on the gripping first-hand accounts of their battlefield experiences, Steve Call allows the TACPs to speak for themselves. He accompanies their narratives with informed analysis of the development of CAS strategy, including potentially controversial aspects of the interservice rivalries between the air force and the army which have at times complicated and even obstructed the optimal employment of TACP assets. Danger Close makes clear, however, that the systematic coordination of air power and ground forces played an invaluable supporting role in the initial military victories in both Afghanistan and Iraq. This first-ever examination of the intense, life-and-death world of the close air support specialist will introduce readers to a crucial but little-known aspect of contemporary warfare and add a needed chapter in American military history studies. STEVE CALL is an assistant professor at Broome Community College in Binghamton, New York, teaching both American and military history. During his twenty-year career in the air force, Call held many command and staff positions, including liaison officer with the army, Pentagon staff officer, and squadron commander. His PhD in military history is from Ohio State University.

Описание: So Far and Yet So Close provides a comparative study of frontier cattle ranching in two societies on opposite ends of the globe. It is also an environmental history that at the same time centres on both the natural and frontier environments. There are many points at which the western Canadian and northern Australian cattle frontiers evoke comparisons. Most obviously they came to life at about the same time: late 1870s-early 1880s. In both cases corporations were heavy investors and utilized an open range system in which tens of thousands of cattle roamed over thousands of square acres. Ranchers shared similar problems such as predators, disease, and weather, as well as markets.Ultimately, a nearly indistinguishable ""country"" culture developed in these geographically disparate and distant lands, which is still apparent today. Many similarities were in one way or another a reflection of frontier environmental conditions that is, conditions associated with the very ""newness"" of society. They included a lack of infrastructure (ie. fences), institutions (ie. police), and population (ie. consumers). However, the ranching people in these two societies had their differences too. In the end, the natural environment pushed agricultural development in these two regions along very different paths.

Описание: The U.S. Navy's Patrol Torpedo (PT) Boats occupy a unique place in American popular view of World War II. From classic films (John Ford's They Were Expendable, based on Lieutenant John A. "Wild Man" Bulkeley's role in the evacuation from the Philippines via PT Boat of General Douglas MacArthur and his staff) to TV comedy (McHale's Navy) to the design of "mosquito boat" insignias for some squadrons by Walt Disney Studios, the PT boat is enshrined in public memory. Above all, the PT boat is remembered for the service of future President John F. Kennedy in the Pacific theater as commander of PT-109 (also the subject of a film). For all of these reasons, these speedy torpedo-bearing gunboats are perhaps the most renowned American naval vessels of the 20th century. In "At Close Quarters: PT Boats in the United States Navy", the U.S. Navy's 1962 official history of PT boats in World War II, author Robert J. Bulkley Jr., himself a PT boat skipper, provides the definitive account of the reality behind the romantic fa ade. After a brief Foreword by President Kennedy, the book opens with an account of PT boat activity in Philippine waters and "Wild Man" Bulkeley's evacuation of MacArthur, and a brief history of their design and construction. The author then provides a detailed account of PT boat attacks on capital ships and night raids on Japanese-held ports and shipping across the Pacific, including Guadalcanal and the Solomons, New Georgia, Bougainville, the Aleutians, and the return to the Philippines and beyond. Although usually viewed from the perspective of the war in the Pacific, At Close Quarters also provides valuable information about the lesser-known role of PT boats in the Mediterranean theater of operations, where they battled their Italian and German equivalents and pre- and post-D-Day operations against German E-boats. Profusely illustrated and carefully documented, At Close Quarters is a naval history classic that anchors the key role of the "mosquito boat" in the deeper reality behind its popular image.
New concerns with the intersections of culture and power, historical agency, and the complexity of social and political life are producing new questions about the United States’ involvement with Latin America. Turning away from political-economic models that see only domination and resistance, exploiters and victims, the contributors to this pathbreaking collection suggest alternate ways of understanding the role that U.S. actors and agencies have played in the region during the postcolonial period.
Exploring a variety of nineteenth- and twentieth-century encounters in Latin America, these theoretically engaged essays by distinguished U.S. and Latin American historians and anthropologists illuminate a wide range of subjects. From the Rockefeller Foundation’s public health initiatives in Central America to the visual regimes of film, art, and advertisements; these essays grapple with new ways of conceptualizing public and private spheres of empire. As such, Close Encounters of Empire initiates a dialogue between postcolonial studies and the long-standing scholarship on colonialism and imperialism in the Americas as it rethinks the cultural dimensions of nationalism and development.
