Описание: Ric?ur lectured and wrote for over twenty years on negation (‘Do I understand something better if I know what it is not, and what is not-ness?’) and never published his extensive writings on this subject. Ric?ur concluded that there are multiple forms of negation; it can, for example, be the other person (Plato), the not knowable nature of our world (Kant), the included opposite (Hegel), apophatic spirituality (Plotinus on not being able to know God) and existential nothingness (Sartre). Ric?ur, working on Kant, Hegel and Sartre, decided that all these forms of negation are incompatible and also fatally flawed because they fail to resolve false binaries of negative: positive. Alison Scott-Baumann demonstrates how Ric?ur subsequently incorporated negation into his linguistic turn, using dialectics, metaphor, narrative, parable and translation in order to show how negation is in us, not outside us: language both creates and clarifies false binaries. He bestows upon negation a strong and central role in the human condition, and its inevitability is reflected in his writings, if we look carefully. Ric?ur and the Negation of Happiness draws on Ric?ur’s published works, previously unavailable archival material and many other sources. Alison Scott-Baumann argues that thinking positively is necessary but not sufficient for aspiring to happiness - what is also required is affirmation of negative impulses: we know we are split by contradictions and still try to overcome them. She also demonstrates the urgency of analysing current socio-cultural debates about wellbeing, education and equality, which rest insecurely upon our loose use of the negative as a category mistake.
Описание: This books studies syntax of NPIs and their interaction with sentential negatives in Hindi. It outlines the clause structure of Hindi and locates the syntactic position of sentential negatives as well as constituent negatives within the structure. It is argued that sentential negative in Hindi negation marker heads its own maximal projection, NegP, which is immediately dominated by TP. In addition to locating the position of negation markers in the clause structure, it outlines the distribution of negative polarity items (NPIs) in Hindi and the structural constraints on their licensing by sentential negative. The book argues that an NPI in Hindi is licensed overtly in the course of derivation by a c-commanding negative marker. The bulk of the evidence presented in this book argues against previous theoretical accounts that claim that NPI licensing involves covert syntactic operations such as LF movement or reconstruction. With respect to the classification of NPIs , this book also shows the existence of two different types of NPIs in Hindi; namely, strong NPIs and weak NPIs. Strong NPIs require a clause mate c-commanding negative licensor, whereas weak NPIs are quantifiers and are similar to free choice 'any' in English that are interpreted as NPIs in the presence of a c-commanding negative licensor.

Ancient Egyptian, generally considered to be an Afroasiatic language, was written for over four thousand years. It is usually divided into five main stages: Old Egyptian, Middle Egyptian, Late Egyptian, Demotic, and Coptic. Ancient Egyptian as a whole is unparalleled among documented languages in terms of continuous length of attestation, variation in registers and genres, and opportunities for historical linguistic research.
Ancient Egyptian has interested general linguists since Alexander von Humboldt. Recently, it has begun to attract the attention of typologists. However, idiosyncrasies of the modern grammatical tradition within Egyptology have prevented nonspecialist linguists from having access to accurate information about any phase of the language. Thus, the quality of data from Ancient Egyptian in general linguistics used to be poor, and most general linguists have understandably refrained from making reference to the language at all.
This gap can be addressed by providing a comprehensive description of the language in straight-forward, accessible terms. This prospect has recently become possible due to a growing interest on the part of linguists working on Ancient Egyptian in making their work transparent to non-Egyptologists.
