John Langan, author of the Bram Stoker Award-winning novel The Fisherman, returns with a new book of stories.
An aspiring actress goes to an audition with a mysterious director. An editor receives the last manuscript of his murdered friend. A young lawyer learns the terrible connection between her grandfather and an ancient race of creatures. A bodyguard drives her employer across a frozen road toward an immense hole in the earth. In these stories and others, John Langan maps the branches of his literary family tree, tracing his connections to the writers whose dark fictions have inspired his own.

The volume gathers specially commissioned essays, organized into five clusters of concepts - boundaries, organization, rupture, novelty, futurity - by leading and emerging thinkers in the arts, humanities and social sciences, and spanning fields including geography, literary studies, cultural theory, philosophy, and politics.

How black women have personified art, expression, identity, and freedom through performance

Winner, 2016 Barnard Hewitt Award for Outstanding Research in Theatre History, presented by the American Society for Theatre Research
Winner, 2016 Errol Hill Award for outstanding scholarship in African American theater, drama, and/or performance studies, presented by the American Society for Theatre Research
Tracing a dynamic genealogy of performance from the nineteenth to the twenty-first century, Uri McMillan contends that black women artists practiced a purposeful self- objectification, transforming themselves into art objects. In doing so, these artists raised new ways to ponder the intersections of art, performance, and black female embodiment. McMillan reframes the concept of the avatar in the service of black performance art, describing black women performers’ skillful manipulation of synthetic selves and adroit projection of their performances into other representational mediums. A bold rethinking of performance art, Embodied Avatars analyzes daring performances of alterity staged by “ancient negress” Joice Heth and fugitive slave Ellen Craft, seminal artists Adrian Piper and Howardena Pindell, and contemporary visual and music artists Simone Leigh and Nicki Minaj. Fusing performance studies with literary analysis and visual culture studies, McMillan offers astute readings of performances staged in theatrical and quotidian locales, from freak shows to the streets of 1970s New York; in literary texts, from artists’ writings to slave narratives; and in visual and digital mediums, including engravings, photography, and video art. Throughout, McMillan reveals how these performers manipulated the dimensions of objecthood, black performance art, and avatars in a powerful re-scripting of their bodies while enacting artful forms of social misbehavior. Описание:
This cumulative work brings together a range of research communities to contextualize and archive over a decade of work in new materialist theorising and knowledge-making practice. Combining a reflective genealogical approach along with productive avenues for future research, this volume is an essential collection for the field of new and feminist materialism.
The collection uses the new materialist movements in thought of changing, intersecting, practicing and transforming. As methods, these movements have engendered the metaphysical questions that different new and feminist materialist practices engage. The volume follows these four movements for genealogical, interdisciplinary, arts-based and politics-orienting research in four parts, each of which is preceded by an introductory framing-essay.
Rosi Braidotti’s preface provides revelatory mappings to bring the book together and curated panels further offer co-authored texts which practise the collective nature of academic thinking advocated by the feminist new materialisms network.
