Описание:
Global environmental change raises profound moral issues with which society has only begun to grapple. What does fairness mean in dividing responsibilities for problems of global warming between rich and poor nations? Does the environment itself have moral standing and, if so, how should its conflicts with the interests of people who depend on the land for their livelihood be resolved? How can the interests of the poor, of indigenous peoples, and of future generations be properly accommodated in a political discourse about environmental policy which is dominated by industrialized states? This book extends the debate both within and across disciplines, engaging philosophers, geographers, political scientists, economists, sociologists, and environmental activists from four continents.
The essays address the role of science in global change and argue that western science does not provide morally disinterested solutions to environmental problems. They discuss the role of state and substate actors in the international politics of the environment, and then use accounts of actual negotiations to argue for the centrality of social justice in reaching desirable and equitable agreements. They conclude that a framework for social justice under conditions of global environmental change must include community values and provide for participatory structures to arbitrate among competing interests.
Описание: "Sit Better" is a groundbreaking guide to the complicated, counterintuitive world of sitting. Author Dr. Turner Osler is a retired surgeon and a lifelong academic researcher with interests in public health and epidemiology. Throughout this book, he carefully shows that our switch to a chair-centered life has been a catastrophe for our posture, our core strength, our back health, and especially to our overall wellbeing. Sitting shortens our lives by two years on average. Although the book intends to show the inherent dangers of sitting, it also offers hopeful guidance so readers can avoid the harms of sitting and optimize their health and longevity. For the first three million years of human history our hunter/gatherer forebears lead lives filled with physical activity. Chairs were unimagined and squatting was the typical "resting" posture - a posture that required considerable muscular engagement. Over this long history, humans came to require daily activity to remain vital and healthy. So, it was unfortunate when chairs and sitting burst onto this scene just 100 years ago. We instantly fell in love with chair sitting, and most of us now sit for over 8 hours a day. Its estimated that there are over 70 chairs for every person in America. Unfortunately, humans are not adapted for the long periods of muscular inactivity encouraged by "ergonomic" chairs, and the health consequences have been catastrophic. Despite this grim news, Dr. Osler is optimistic. He believes that if we can change how much we sit, how long we sit for, and especially how we sit, the harms of sitting can be avoided. Indeed, he holds out the hope that sitting can be made healthful by switching to chairs that make sitting active, rather than passive. So, could sitting be harnessed to add more movement to our days? Dr. Osler shows how its possible.

Описание: The Myth of William Osler presents a radical re-examination of the philosophies and practices of a renowned American medical hero. It challenges widely-accepted beliefs about Osler which, while unsettling to many readers, brings to light interpretations and approaches which have disrespected Osler's expressed wishes, exaggerated his achievements and dishonoured his memory. The Myth questions the originality of both Osler's teaching philosophies and his educational legacies, and the credit he received for educational innovations that were not his. It examines Osler's disregard of contemporary advances occurring in moral philosophy and medical ethics, his uncertain values and his documented unethical practices. The Myth argues that Osler's immutable habit, his proclaimed Way, reflected a lifelong application to each task that, in the end, became his defining flaw. While William Osler's reputation as a learned medical historian is not contested, The Myth attests that even here, his interpretations of medicine's history were highly selective, often constructed to support a view predicated on Ancient Greek, Renaissance European and English medical philosophies and practices. Osler's teaching-as revered as it was-centred on the ancient tradition of the Hippocratic art of observation while remaining largely untouched by the emerging importance of the patient's history that was being pursued by more unbiased and innovative others. William Osler's legacy will stand but with a greater complexity than has been previously appreciated.
