"Albert," the neighbor said, "your mom needs you to come home." That's how it began for Albert Hsu when his father died. Anyone who has lost a loved one to suicide experiences tremendous shock and trauma. What follows is a confusing mix of emotions--anger, guilt, grief, and despair. Suicide raises heartrending questions: Why did this happen? Why didn't we see it coming? Could we have done anything to prevent it? How can we go on? Many also wonder if those who choose suicide are doomed to an eternity separated from God and their loved ones. Some may even start asking whether life is worth living at all. After his father's death, Hsu wrestled with the intense emotional and theological questions surrounding suicide. While acknowledging that there are no easy answers, he draws on the resources of the Christian faith to point suicide survivors to the God who offers comfort in our grief and hope for the future. For those who have lost a loved one to suicide and for their counselors and pastors, this book is an essential companion for the journey toward healing. This revised edition incorporates updated statistics and now includes a discussion guide for suicide survivor groups.

Описание: Poetry. Asian & Asian American Studies. Though she describes herself as 'not ethnic enough, ' everything in this book bears the brand of Clara Hsu's Chinese identity. A couplet like this, 'Where there is no beginning or end there are definitely walls wars' would have a profoundly different effect if it had been written by a non Chinese person. Those troublesome r's and l's--so often mindlessly parodied by the non Chinese--inform the words 'walls' and 'wars, ' and each of those words might suggest aspects of Chinese experience in the USA. Clara Hsu is also a professional musician, and this book clearly makes a music--a music which extends to what I believe is the only homophonic translation of a Chinese poem that anyone has produced. As Eastern and Western modes harmonize and collide--and though there are autobiographical elements here--reading this book makes it clear that you don't have to write autobiography (grandmother's congee) in order to write 'ethnic' poetry. Poems like 'Not Ethnic Enough, ' 'Moving with Li Po, ' 'Metamorphosis of a Poem by Su Shi, ' and 'Mad House Fantasia and Fugue'--to say nothing of the amazing sequence on the Tao-te Ching--reveal Hsu's Chinese identity in a way that would be impossible to the autobiographically-bound construct that is the usual 'ethnic' offering. And if she plays on 'walls' and 'wars' in the title poem, look at what she does to the word 'like' in 'ekillike.' Clara Hsu was born in Hong Kong; she came to the United States as a young girl. How is Hong Kong like San Francisco? How is she like American women? What does she like about America? (The poem began as a response to another Chinese-American woman's work--and to the woman's excessive use of 'like'--but behind it is also Gertrude Stein's palindromic portrait of Lipschitz: 'Like and like likely and likely likely and likely like and like.') The range of the work and of the intellect in The First to Escape is extraordinary. That the book is 'challenging' is no doubt true. But you will find feelings and perceptions here that you will not find anywhere else. Most importantly, you will find poetry. This Hong-Kong-born, San- Francisco-residing, Chinese-English- speaking writer/performer has an exquisite ear for the structures of American verse.--Jack Foley

Описание: Ethnic Europe examines the increasingly complex ethnic challenges facing the expanding European Union. Essays from eleven experts tackle such issues as labor migration, strains on welfare economies, the durability of local traditions, the effects of globalized cultures, and the role of Islamic diasporas, separatist movements, and threats of terrorism. With Europe now a destination for global immigration, European countries are increasingly alert to the difficult struggle to balance minority rights with social cohesion. In pondering these dilemmas, the contributors to this volume take us from theory, history, and broad views of diasporas, to the particularities of neighborhoods, borderlands, and popular literature and film that have been shaped by the mixing of ethnic cultures.

Описание: Offers multifaceted explorations of how Chinese Americans have shaped their ethnic culture and identities to claim recognition in America's multiracial, multicultural democratic state
Perhaps the most popular of all canonical American authors, Mark Twain is famous for creating works that satirize American formations of race and empire. While many scholars have explored Twain’s work in African Americanist contexts, his writing on Asia and Asian Americans remains largely in the shadows. In Sitting in Darkness, Hsuan Hsu examines Twain’s career-long archive of writings about United States relations with China and the Philippines. Comparing Twain’s early writings about Chinese immigrants in California and Nevada with his later fictions of slavery and anti-imperialist essays, he demonstrates that Twain’s ideas about race were not limited to white and black, but profoundly comparative as he carefully crafted assessments of racialization that drew connections between groups, including African Americans, Chinese immigrants, and a range of colonial populations.
Drawing on recent legal scholarship, comparative ethnic studies, and transnational and American studies, Sitting in Darkness engages Twain’s best-known novels such as Tom Sawyer, Huckleberry Finn, and A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court, as well as his lesser-known Chinese and trans-Pacific inflected writings, such as the allegorical tale “A Fable of the Yellow Terror” and the yellow face play Ah Sin. Sitting in Darkness reveals how within intersectional contexts of Chinese Exclusion and Jim Crow, these writings registered fluctuating connections between immigration policy, imperialist ventures, and racism.
