Описание: Is what we have reason to do a matter of fact? If so, what kind of truth is involved, how can we know it, and how do reasons motivate and explain action? In this concise and lucid book T. M. Scanlon offers answers, with a qualified defense of normative cognitivism-the view that there are normative truths about reasons for action.

Описание: Through the whole history of mankind philosophers have taken pride in being reasonable agents. During the last decades Rudiger Bittner, one of the internationally best renown german philosophers and winner of the Gottlob Frege award 2011, has developed a surprisingly different picture: We are much more part than master of the universe. The articles in the volume address this challenging view, illuminating and discussing it from various angles of practical philosophy including the aesthetics of film and theatre. Authors: Ansgar Beckermann (Bielefeld), Rudiger Bittner (Bielefeld), Raymond Geuss (Cambridge), Martina Herrmann (Dortmund), Marco Iorio (Potsdam), Susanne Kaul (Bielefeld), Jens Kulenkampff (Erlangen), Hajo Kurzenberger (Hildesheim), Kirsten Meyer (Berlin), Onora O'Neill (Cambridge), Ralf Stoecker (Bielefeld), Jay Wallace (Berkeley).

Описание: What are epistemic reasons? What are epistemic norms? What is our basic epistemic goal? In recent years, questions about epistemic reasons, norms, and goals have seen an upsurge of interest. Pursuing these questions has not only proven fertile for our understanding of key concepts and phenomena studied in epistemology, but also for a wide area of issues in philosophy of mind and action and in philosophy of language and meta-ethics. The present volume brings together eighteen essays, seventeen of them new, by established and upcoming philosophers in the field. The contributions are arranged into four sections: (1) epistemic reasons, (2) different aspects of epistemic norms, (3) epistemic consequentialism, and (4) epistemic goals and values. The volume is key reading for researchers and students of philosophy interested in epistemic normativity and beyond.

Описание:
Virtues and reasons are two of the most fruitful and important concepts in contemporary moral philosophy. Many writers have commented upon the close connection between virtues and reasons, but no one has done full justice to the complexity of this connection. It is generally recognized that the virtues not only depend upon reasons, but also sometimes provide them. The essays in this volume shed light on precisely how virtues and reasons are related to each other and what can be learned by exploring this relationship.
?
Virtue's Reasons is divided into three sections, each of them devoted to a general issue regarding the relationship between virtues and reasons. The first section analyzes how the virtues may be related to, or linked with, normative reasons in ways that improve our understanding of what constitutes virtuous character and ethical agency. The second section explores the reasons moral agents have for cultivating the virtues and how the virtues impact moral responsiveness or development. The final section examines how reasons can be employed in understanding the nature of virtue, and how specific virtues, like modesty and practical wisdom, interact with reasons. This book will be of major interest to scholars working on virtue theory, the nature of moral character, and normative ethics.

Описание: Much of the recent literature on political perfectionism has focused on dealing with objections to this view. This book adopts a different approach: It attempts to highlight the intuitive appeal of liberal perfectionism by presenting a positive prima facie argument in its favour. The book starts by clarifying the relation between political perfectionism — a conception of politics — and prudential perfectionism and ethical perfectionism — a conception of the good life, and a type of ethical theory. It is crucial to start by selecting a plausible form of ethical perfectionism, as it makes an important difference to the plausibility of the political conception based upon it. Once appropriate distinctions are drawn and a plausible form of liberal perfectionism is endorsed, many of the standard objections to perfectionism are shown to fail to reach their target. Different arguments in favour of liberal perfectionism are then proposed and critically examined, but the resilience of some pragmatic arguments against liberal perfectionism is conceded. The book ends by showing that perfectionism can be surprisingly relevant for discussions of social justice and proceeds to draw a sketch of the perfectionist implications for questions of distributive justice.
