An Elementary Guide to the State of the Art in the Quantum Information Field

Introduction to Quantum Physics and Information Processing guides beginners in understanding the current state of research in the novel, interdisciplinary area of quantum information. Suitable for undergraduate and beginning graduate students in physics, mathematics, or engineering, the book goes deep into issues of quantum theory without raising the technical level too much.

The text begins with the basics of quantum mechanics required to understand how two-level systems are used as qubits. It goes on to show how quantum properties are exploited in devising algorithms for problems that are more efficient than the classical counterpart. It then explores more sophisticated notions that form the backbone of quantum information theory.

Requiring no background in quantum physics, this text prepares readers to follow more advanced books and research material in this rapidly growing field. Examples, detailed discussions, exercises, and problems facilitate a thorough, real-world understanding of quantum information.

Описание:

If the carriers of information are governed by quantum mechanics, new principles for information processing apply. This graduate textbook introduces the underlying mathematical theory for quantum communication, computation, and cryptography. A focus lies on the concept of quantum channels, understanding fi gures of merit, e.g. fidelities and entropies in the quantum world, and understanding the interrelationship of various quantum information processing protocols.

Описание:

While there are many available textbooks on quantum information theory, most are either too technical for beginners or not complete enough. Filling this gap, Elements of Quantum Computation and Quantum Communication gives a clear, self-contained introduction to quantum computation and communication. Written primarily for undergraduate students in physics, mathematics, computer science, and related disciplines, this introductory text is also suitable for researchers interested in quantum computation and communication.

Developed from the author's lecture notes, the text begins with developing a perception of classical and quantum information and chronicling the history of quantum computation and communication. It then covers classical and quantum Turing machines, error correction, the quantum circuit model of computation, and complexity classes relevant to quantum computing and cryptography. After presenting mathematical techniques frequently used in quantum information theory and some basic ideas from quantum mechanics, the author describes quantum gates, circuits, algorithms, and error-correcting codes. He also explores the significance and applications of two unique quantum communication schemes: quantum teleportation and superdense coding. The book concludes with various aspects of quantum cryptography.

Exploring recent developments and open questions in the field, this text prepares readers for further study and helps them understand more advanced texts and journal papers. Along with thought-provoking cartoons and brief biographies of key players in the field, each chapter includes examples, references, exercises, and problems with detailed solutions.

Описание:

The theoretical methods of quantum chemistry have matured to the point that accurate predictions can be made and experiments can be understood for a wide range of important gas-phase phenomena. A large part of this success can be attributed to the maturation of hierarchies of approximation, which allow one to approach very high accuracy, provided that sufficient computational resources are available. Until recently, these hierarchies have not been available in condensed-phase chemistry, but recent advances in the field have now led to a group of methods that are capable of reaching this goal.

Accurate Condensed-Phase Quantum Chemistry addresses these new methods and the problems to which they can be applied. The book begins with an overview of periodic treatments of electron correlation, with an emphasis on the algorithmic features responsible for their computational efficiency. The first section of the book:

  • Describes the Laplace-transform approach to periodic second-order perturbation theory (MP2)
  • Examines local and density fitted schemes for MP2 in crystalline systems
  • Presents test calculations for a variety of systems with small and medium-sized unit cells

The next section focuses on methods based on treatment of the periodic solid in terms of fragments. This part of the book:

  • Explores the incremental many-body scheme for electron correlation in solids, and describes progress towards metals and molecules on surfaces
  • Describes the hierarchical method as an alternative fragment-based approach to electron correlation in crystalline solids, using conventional molecular electronic structure methods
  • Examines electrostatically embedded many-body expansion for large systems, with an emphasis on molecular clusters and molecular liquids
  • Explores delocalized and localized orbital approaches to the electronic structures of periodic and non-periodic solids

Lastly, the book describes a practical method by which conventional molecular electronic structure theory can be applied to molecular liquids and solids. Along with the methodology, it presents results on small to medium water clusters as well as on liquid water.

Описание: The concept of a chemical bond evolved from a variety of experimental observations. It became useful to understand, at times even predict, the molecular structure, reactivity and mechanism of chemical reactions. Every aspect of the concept of bonding received a quantitative interpretation from the advent of quantum mechanics and its application to chemistry. In Lectures on Chemical Bonding and Quantum Chemistry the reader will find a comprehensive discourse on the basic interpretation of the chemical bond as well as current understanding in terms of a 'dancing' molecule that not only travels, rotates and pulsates around an equilibrium molecular structure, but also interacts and collides with other molecules, thereby transferring linear and angular momentum characteristics and adjusting total energies. One will also find a thorough survey of quantum mechanical methodologies for calculation of molecular characteristics in specific states and their changes under spectroscopic transitions, tunneling, electron and proton transfer phenomena, and so on. Guides to more advanced levels of theory are also provided.
