Описание:

Written with passion and intelligence, the letters of the Abraham Lincoln Brigade in World War II express the raw idealism of anti-fascist soldiers who experienced the war in boot camps, cockpits, and foxholes, but never lost sight of the great global issues at stake.
When the United States entered World War II on December 7, 1941, only one group of American soldiers had already confronted the fascist enemy on the battlefield: the U.S. veterans of the Lincoln Brigade, a volunteer army of about 2,800 men and women who had enlisted to defend the Spanish Republic from military rebels during the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939). They fought on the losing side.
After Pearl Harbor, Lincoln Brigade veterans enthusiastically joined the U.S. Army, welcoming this second chance to fight against fascism. However, the Lincoln recruits soon encountered suspicious military leaders who questioned their patriotism and denied them promotions and overseas assignments, foreshadowing the political persecution of the postwar Red Scare. African American veterans who fought in fully integrated units in Spain, faced second-class treatment in Americas Jim Crow army. Nevertheless, the Lincolns served with distinction in every theater of the war and won a disproportionate number of medals for courage, dedication, and sacrifice.
The 154 letters in this volume, selected from thousands held in the Abraham Lincoln Brigade Archives at NYU’s Tamiment Library, provide a new and unique perspective on aspects of World War II.

War to War: A Bloodline Continues promotes American history through the eyes of horses and their human families. During the Second World War, two stallions--Boss and Jubal--must reconcile their familial legacy or risk ending a bloodline that survived the American Civil War, Comanche Wars, and the Great War. Another war could break the family chain.

The lives of two black stallions are put at center stage. One horse carried troopers on the battlefield, the other remained home. Between wars, the brothers are united on uncertain terms. Their differences escalate when the world again faces tyranny. But there is hope. Their paths to reconciliation are fostered by a retired veteran and veterinarian--Dr. Abraham Bates--who is caught between slaying his own emotional demons or risk losing a family. His wife Amelia demands it. Time and distance are needed to heal.

Описание: As a gateway to central questions in linguistics, non-finiteness is unavoidable in both typological studies and aspects of natural language processing, such as text segmentation and annotation. This study presents a `process relation framework` to explain the more complex, previously unaccounted for, instances of non-finiteness in clause structure.

Описание:

Accounts of three men who served with the elite Virginia infantry regiments

No student of the American Civil War can be unaware of the inspirational figure of the Confederate General Thomas 'Stonewall' Jackson. His was a superb military mind and an accidental arm wound was such a severe blow to his cause that it prompted the Confederate military commander, Robert E. Lee, to declare: 'He has lost his left arm, but I have lost my right.' In fact, more tragically for Lee and the South, the wound proved fatal. Jackson was an inspirational leader of the first rank and the men of his 'foot cavalry' justifiably thought highly of their own reputations and demonstrated their prowess repeatedly on campaign and battlefield. This unique Leonaur edition concerns the service of three of 'Jackson's Men'. The first and largest account by Casler is well known and highly regarded. It tells the story of a confederate soldier at war with few holds barred, for Casler boldly demonstrates that to survive he had to be as much a rogue as he was a rebel. Also included in this book are two smaller accounts concerning two other members of the Stonewall Brigade, Hugh White and Randolf Fairfax, which would have been unlikely to have been republished individually. The Casler edition in this book contains the expanded text of the second edition, published in 1906. This Leonaur edition contains the illustrations which accompanied both versions of Casler's text.

Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket.

Описание: A famous Confederate commander and the elite force that bore his name

The American Civil War, which split the nation's small officer cadre in two, inevitably ensured many young officers from both Union and Confederate states would reach high rank. Some of those men earned abiding fame. One of the subjects of this book, John Bell Hood, needs little introduction to any student of the period. Hood, a veritable 'Viking warrior' of a figure epitomised the dash, daring and aggressive command in action which typified the cream of the officer corps of the Confederate Army and his leadership qualities elevated him from the rank of First-Lieutenant, USA to Lieutenant-General, CSA. Initially he directly led the equally renowned hard fighting infantry of his 'Texas Brigade, ' consisting of the 1st, 4th and 5th Texas Infantry together with the 18th Georgia Infantry and, later, the 3rd Arkansas Infantry. There was, of course, a justifiable glamour associated with these men from the 'wild' west, particularly when led by the imposing figure, character and military talent of Hood. 'Hood's Texas Brigade' amply justified their reputation as a force to be reckoned with and, along with the 'Stonewall Brigade, ' were thought of as the 'shock troops' of the Army of Northern Virginia. They saw action in many of the pivotal engagements of the conflict including, of course, at Gettysburg where they came under Hood's divisional command. This book combines a detailed history of the services of 'Hood's Texas Brigade' with a short biography of John Bell Hood, who was ultimately transferred to the western theatre of the conflict and the Army of Tennessee.

Описание: Drawing on extensive interviews with surviving members of the George Jackson Brigade, this book provides an inside-out perspective on the social movements of the 1970s. It is also a compelling exploration of the true nature of crime and a provocative meditation on the tension between self-restraint and anger in the process of social change.

Описание:

Alfred Mallory Edgar was born on July 10, 1837, in Greenbrier County, West] Virginia, the son of Archer Edgar and Nancy Howe Pearis. Their mill, known as Edgar's Mill, is now the site of present day Ronceverte, West Virginia. At the outbreak of the Civil War, the family owned ten slaves, five males and five females, ranging in age from 7 to 39 years old.

On May 9, 1861, at 23 years of age, Alfred volunteered for service in the Greenbrier Rifles, which would become part of the 27th Virginia Infantry, a regiment in the famous Stonewall Brigade of the Confederate Army. The Stonewall Brigade received their name from their legendary commander, General Thomas J. "Stonewall" Jackson. The 27th Virginia fought in many of the major campaigns and battles of the Civil War, including First Manassas, the 1862 Shenandoah Valley Campaign, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, and the 1864 battles of the Wilderness. Edgar was wounded in the left shoulder at the Bloody Angle at Spotsylvania Court House, Virginia, on May 12, 1864, and was made a prisoner of war. He was sent to Fort Delaware until he became part of a group that would be known as The Immortal 600. This group of Confederate officers were taken to Morris Island, South Carolina, at the entrance to Charleston Harbor, and exposed to enemy artillery fire for 45 days in an attempt to silence the Confederate gunners manning Fort Sumter. This was in retaliation for the Confederate Army imprisoning 50 Union Army officers and using them as human shields against federal artillery in the city of Charleston, in an attempt to stop Union artillery from firing upon the city. Edgar was finally released on June 16, 1865.

In June, 1875, he married Lydia McNeel, daughter of Col. Paul McNeel, whom he had met while a student at the old Lewisburg Academy. They settled at Hillsboro in Pocahontas County, West Virginia, where he was a farmer and stockman. Captain Edgar died in Pocahontas County on October 8, 1913, and is buried in the McNeel Cemetery.

Later in life, he wrote his reminiscences of the war. This work presents those memoirs with only minimal editing. It is the compelling personal account of a young Confederate soldier describing his dramatic experience in the Civil War and its impact on his life, family, and community.
