In A Lost Peace, Galen Jackson rewrites an important chapter in the history of the middle period of the Cold War, changing how we think about the Arab-Israeli conflict.
During the June 1967 Middle East war, Israeli forces seized the Sinai Peninsula and the Gaza Strip from Egypt, the Golan Heights from Syria, and the West Bank and East Jerusalem from Jordan. This conflict was followed, in October 1973, by a joint Egyptian-Syrian attack on Israel, which threatened to drag the United States and the Soviet Union into a confrontation even though the superpowers had seemingly embraced the idea of d?tente. This conflict contributed significantly to the ensuing deterioration of US-Soviet relations.
The standard explanation for why d?tente failed is that the Soviet Union, driven mainly by its Communist ideology, pursued a highly aggressive foreign policy during the 1970s. In the Middle East specifically, the conventional wisdom is that the Soviets played a destabilizing role by encouraging the Arabs in their conflict with Israel in an effort to undermine the US position in the region for Cold War gain.
Jackson challenges standard accounts of this period, demonstrating that the United States sought to exploit the Soviet Union in the Middle East, despite repeated entreaties from USSR leaders that the superpowers cooperate to reach a comprehensive Arab-Israeli settlement. By leveraging the remarkable evidence now available to scholars, Jackson reveals that the United States and the Soviet Union may have missed an opportunity for Middle East peace during the 1970s.
Описание: China is transforming from a big continental country to a strong maritime power, and its maritime strategy is playing an increasingly important role in China's overall foreign strategy.Since its inception, the 'One Belt and One Road Initiative' has been increasingly seen as the centerpiece of China's new grand strategy, with the 'One Road' — the establishment of a 'maritime silk road' — serving as the core. Building this '21st-century maritime silk road' will involve more than 20 countries and regions, and the proposal has been strongly welcomed and supported by most countries along the road, as it is seen not only as a new platform for mutually beneficial relationships economically, but also as a new mechanism for maritime security cooperation in the Pacific and the Indian Ocean.Drawing on the expertise of Chinese and international scholars, the book will focus on China's '21st-century maritime silk road' initiative, evaluate its strategic implication at home and abroad, and provide new proposals and perspectives for its future development.
Some of the United States' greatest challenges over the coming decades are likely to emanate from the Asia-Pacific region. China and India are rising and Militant Islam continues to take root in Pakistan, while nuclear proliferation threatens to continue in fits and starts. If America is to meet these challenges comprehensively, strategists will have to learn more about Asia, and Asian scholars, policymakers, and analysts will need to understand better the enduring and timeless principles of strategy.
Based on the premise therefore that the increasing strategic weight of the Asia-Pacific region warrants greater attention from both scholars and practitioners alike, Strategy in Asia: The Past, Present, and Future of Regional Security aims to marry the fields of strategic studies and Asian studies in order to help academics and practitioners to begin addressing these challenges. The book uses the lenses of geography, culture, and economics to examine in depth the strategic context that Asia presents to the major nations of the region--including the U.S. as a Pacific nation--and the strategic scenarios that may well play out in the region in the near future. Specific attention is paid to Asia as a warfighting environment, and to the warfighting traditions and current postures of the major nations.

Описание: Andrew J. Nathan and Andrew Scobell analyze China`s security concerns on four fronts: at home, with its immediate neighbors, in surrounding regional systems, and in the world beyond Asia. By illuminating the issues driving Chinese policy, they offer a new perspective on the country`s rise and a strategy for balancing Chinese and American interests in Asia. The authors probe recent troubles in Tibet and Xinjiang, exploring their links to forces beyond China`s borders. They also consider the tactics deployed by mainland China and Taiwan, as the latter seeks to maintain autonomy in the face of Chinese advances toward unification, and they evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of China`s three main power resources--economic power, military power, and soft power.

China's President Xi Jinping launched the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) in 2013. The BRI is promoted as a way for win-win cooperation that promotes common development and prosperity. Since the introduction of BRI, China organised the inaugural One Belt One Road Summit and the Second Belt and Road Forum to spur the implementation of the Initiative.
President Xi emphasised that the Belt and Road projects should uphold the principles of shared benefits and joint contributions to realise the vision of a high-quality, open, green and clean BRI. Host countries can possibly gain from China's greenfield manufacturing investments to expand the BRI markets.
Contributed by academics and business professionals from Asia, Europe and Africa, the chapters discuss the contemporary people, business, civil society and government developments related to the BRI and explore Health, Environment and Security (HES) challenges that confront the Initiative. This volume shows how a host country can leverage on China's investment without losing the nation's interest.

Описание: An exploration of Turkey`s future role and impact on European energy security, looking at the connection between geopolitics, energy security and the EU`s need for energy. The book focuses on Turkey`s foreign and energy policies and importance as a natural funnel through which the EU can access hydrocarbons and renewables.
Assessments of China's importance on the world stage usually focus on a single dimension of China's increasing power, rather than on the multiple sources of China's rise, including its economic might and the continuing modernization of its military. This book offers multiple analytical perspectives—constructivist, liberal, neorealist—on the significance of the many dimensions of China's regional and global influence.Distinguished authors consider the likelihood of conflict and peaceful accommodation as China grows ever stronger. They look at the changing position of China "from the inside": How do Chinese policymakers evaluate the contemporary international order and what are the regional and global implications of that worldview? The authors also address the implications of China's increasing power for Chinese policymaking and for the foreign policies of Korea, Japan, and the United States.

Описание: The rapid modernization of the Chinese Navy is a well-documented reality of the post-Cold War world. This book makes sense of Chinese priorities in its naval modernization and argues that the orientation of Beijing`s choices concerning its naval forces can essentially be explained by China`s position as a potential regional hegemony.

Описание:
One of the most significant factors for contemporary international relations is the growth of China's economic, military, and political power. Indeed, few analysts would dispute the observation that China's power has strongly influenced the structure of the international system, major-power strategic relations, international security, the patterns of trans-border economic activities, and most importantly, the political and security dynamics in Asia in the twenty-first century.
This book maps the growth of China's political, economic, and military capabilities and its impact on the security order in Asia over the coming decades. While updating the emerging power dimensions and prevailing discourse, it provides a nuanced analysis of whether the growth of Chinese power is resulting in Beijing becoming more assertive, or even aggressive, in its behavior and pursuit of national interests. It also examines how the key Asian countries perceive and react to the growth of China's power and how US rebalancing would play out in the context of Beijing's political, economic, and military power.
China's Power and Asian Security will be of huge interest to student and scholars of Asian politics, Chinese politics, security studies and international security and international relations more generally.
