Описание:
Over the course of the twentieth century, Catholics, who make up a quarter of the population of the United States, made significant contributions to American culture, politics, and society. They built powerful political machines in Chicago, Boston, and New York; led influential labor unions; created the largest private school system in the nation; and established a vast network of hospitals, orphanages, and charitable organizations. Yet in both scholarly and popular works of history, the distinctive presence and agency of Catholics as Catholics is almost entirely absent.
In this book, R. Scott Appleby and Kathleen Sprows Cummings bring together American historians of race, politics, social theory, labor, and gender to address this lacuna, detailing in cogent and wide-ranging essays how Catholics negotiated gender relations, raised children, thought about war and peace, navigated the workplace and the marketplace, and imagined their place in the national myth of origins and ends. A long overdue corrective, Catholics in the American Century restores Catholicism to its rightful place in the American story.

Описание: In Pentecostals and Roman Catholics on Becoming a Christian, Dr. Karen Murphy explores the fifth round of the International Roman Catholic-Pentecostal Dialogue (1998-2006). Discussing Spirit-baptism, faith, conversion, experience, and discipleship, Dr. Murphy notes areas in which the Dialogue has evolved since its inception in 1972. She unpacks the commonalities that bond Catholics and Pentecostals and examines theological divergences and challenges to dialogue. While Catholics approach becoming a Christian from a sacramental perspective, most Pentecostals think of Christian initiation in non-sacramental, or conversionist, terms, a reality that fosters ongoing tensions between the two traditions. Dr. Murphy reveals how Catholics and Pentecostals seek to overcome this dichotomy by honoring spirituality and experience as integral to the ecumenical encounter.

Описание: President Franklin D. Roosevelt put it bluntly, if privately, in 1942-the United States was a Protestant country, he said, and the Catholics and Jews are here under sufferance. In Tri-Faith America, Kevin Schultzexplains how the United States left behind this idea that it was a Protestant nation and replaced it with a new national image, one premised on the notion that the country was composed of three separate, equally American faiths-Protestants, Catholics, and Jews. Tracing the origins of the tri-faith idea to the early twentieth century, when Catholic and Jewish immigration forced Protestant Social Gospelers to combine forces with Catholic and Jewish relief agencies, Tri-Faith America shows how the tri-faith idea gathered momentum after World War I, promoted by public relations campaigns, interfaith organizations, and the government, to the point where, by the end of World War II and into the early years of the Cold War, the idea was becoming widely accepted, particularly in the armed forces, fraternities, neighborhoods, social organizations, and schools. Tri-Faith America also shows how postwar Catholics and Jews used the new image to force the country to confront the challenges of pluralism. Should Protestant bibles be allowed on public school grounds? Should Catholic and Jewish fraternities be allowed to exclude Protestants? Should the government be allowed to count Americans by religion? Challenging the image of the conformist 1950s, Schultz describes how Americans were vigorously debating the merits of recognizing pluralism, paving the way for the civil rights movement and leaving an enduring mark on American culture.

Описание: This book examines the traditional power structures of the Catholic Church and questions the need for radical change.
The Church is calling Catholics to bring the good news of Jesus Christ to a world that desperately needs it. Parishes need to reach out to the wider community beyond their walls, and individuals need to become confident witnesses to the transforming love of Jesus Christ.
But what does this evangelizing mission look like for you and your parish? How can you begin? And how is this different from "Church as usual"?
This little book will help you imagine the answers to those questions with practical advice and creative ideas to get you started. Read the list of ideas, pray over them, and check off the ones that inspire you. Use these ideas as a starting point, modifying or developing them as necessary to fit your own mission field: your parish, family, workplace, and neighborhood. Then, go out and do it
Evangelization is our call ... so with the help of the Holy Spirit, let's share the good news with a world that needs it

A strong desire to offer Catholics--who may be cut-off from the traditional, parish-centred life of the Church for whatever reason--a practical guide to nurture and sustain a genuine Catholic spirituality, is what lies at the heart of this book by Peter de Haas.
Ongoing pastoral and spiritual support of isolated Catholics in the vast Gulf Savannah Parish in Far North Queensland was the original inspiration and motivation for this guide. However, much of the content may be helpful for others who identify as Catholic (or Christian) but are still longing or searching for a deeper and richer spirituality. Some might be feeling spiritually lost ... one of the meanings of 'bushed'.
The book is organised into two main parts. The first deals with some big questions concerning our very existence, then leads into some of the key elements of Catholic faith and beliefs. The second contains proven practices--some quite ancient--which have assisted countless Catholics (and other Christians) to personally encounter God (the God who is always seeking us).
Bridging these is the pivotal chapter, Thy Kingdom Come. Connecting with the original vision and mission of Jesus concerning the Kingdom (or Reign) of God is spiritually very empowering. From a glimpse of this 'original' we can discover a much more expansive, and very inclusive, vision of what it means to be 'church', especially within a family setting.
To assist ongoing formation--individually, within families and in small groups--the book also contains stimulating questions for reflection and discussion.
