In Landscapes of Power Dana E. In Violence as Obscenity, Kevin W. Saunders boldly calls into question the assumption that violent material is protected by the First Amendment. Citing a recognized exception to the First Amendment that allows for the regulation of obscene material, he seeks to expand the definition of obscenity to include explicit and offensive depictions of violence. Saunders examines the public debate on media violence, the arguments of professional and public interest groups urging governmental action, and the media and the ACLU’s desire for self-regulation. Citing research that links violence in the media to actual violence, Saunders argues that a present danger to public safety may be reduced by invoking the existing law on obscenity. Reviewing the justifications of that law, he finds that not only is the legal history relied on by the Supreme Court inadequate to distinguish violence from sex, but also many of the justifications apply more forcefully to instances of violence than to sexually explicit material that has been ruled obscene. Saunders also examines the actions that Congress, states, and municipalities have taken to regulate media violence as well as the legal limitations imposed on such regulations by the First Amendment protections given to speech and the press. In discussing the current operation of the obscenity exception and confronting the issue of censorship, he advocates adapting to the regulation of violent material the doctrine of variable obscenity, which applies a different standard for material aimed at youth, and the doctrine of indecency, which allows for federal regulation of broadcast material. Elizabeth Brown, "Quatie," a full blood Cherokee of the Bird Clan, was born in 1791 in the southern Appalachian Mountains of what is now Tennessee. Quatie became a wife, a mother, a helper to her husband -- John Ross, Chief of the Cherokees, and First Lady of the Cherokee Nation.
The Cherokee Nation of her time was the largest and most progressive of all the Native American tribes. The Cherokees had their own schools, their own postal system, and their own newspaper, The Cherokee Phoenix (established in 1828). They built Christian churches, schools and houses; planted fields and orchards, kept herds of beef cattle, manufactured cloth, built roads, and operated taverns and ferries. They had a system of laws which were enforced by peace officers and native courts. In 1828, the Cherokee Nation adopted a written constitution and established a government with a legislature, courts, and an executive branch.
Quatie was born in a world where the Cherokee culture and the white culture met and lived in peace together for a time. Unfortunately, the new-comers lusted for the Cherokee's land, which caused the peace between the two cultures to be short lived.

Описание: During my research for a previous book called Frontier Forts and Post of the Hudsons Bay Com- pany, I could not help but notice that there were many First Nation communities in close proximity to these sites. I also noticed that many of these communities had churches, most of which were very old and quite unique, architecturally speaking. It was at this point that I started venturing out to various communities compiling historical information and photographing these fascinating structures. The architectural designs and workmanship of the old buildings that no longer stand represented for the most part a legacy of aboriginal carpentry skills and great effort that should never be forgotten.
Museum practice regarding handling and preservation of objects has been largely taken as a given, and it can be difficult to see how these activities are politicized. Author Miriam Clavir argues that museum practices are historically grounded and represent values that are not necessarily held by the originators of the objects. She first focuses on conservation and explains the principles and methods conservators practise. She then discusses First Nations people's perspectives on preservation, quoting extensively from interviews done throughout British Columbia, and comparing the British Columbia situation with that in New Zealand.
