The author argues that the 1970s was a critical moment in human rights history one that transformed political culture, social movements, law, and foreign policy. They identified three overlapping stages of development as children transitioned from being regarded as objects to subjects in their own right: social laissez-faire, paternalistic protection, and children's rights.
