The 2015 Affirmatively Furthering Fair Housing Rule was the most significant federal effort to increase equality of access to place-based resources and opportunities, such as high-performing schools or access to jobs, since the 1968 Fair Housing Act. However, in an effort to appeal to suburban voters, the Trump administration repealed the rule in 2020, leaving its future in doubt.
Furthering Fair Housing analyzes multiple dimensions of this rule, identifying failures of past efforts to increase housing choice, exploring how the AFFH Rule was crafted, measuring the initial effects of the rule before its rescission, and examining its interaction with other contemporary housing issues, such as affordability, gentrification, anti-displacement, and zoning policies.
The editors and contributors to this volume—a mix of civil rights advocates, policymakers, and public officials—provide critical perspectives and identify promising new directions for future policies and practices. Placing the history of fair housing in the context of the centuries-long struggle for racial equity, Furthering Fair Housing shows how this policy can be revived and enhanced to advance racial equity in America’s neighborhoods.

Описание: Winner of the 2019 New-York Historical Society Barbara and David Zalaznick Book Prize in American History Winner of the 2018 American Academy of Diplomacy Douglas Dillon Award Shortlisted for the 2018 Duff Cooper Prize in Literary Nonfiction Honorable Mention (runner-up) for the 2019 ASEEES Marshall D. Shulman Prize" A] brilliant book...by far the best study yet" (Paul Kennedy, The Wall Street Journal) of the gripping history behind the Marshall Plan and its long-lasting influence on our world. In the wake of World War II, with Britain's empire collapsing and Stalin's on the rise, US officials under new Secretary of State George C. Marshall set out to reconstruct western Europe as a bulwark against communist authoritarianism. Their massive, costly, and ambitious undertaking would confront Europeans and Americans alike with a vision at odds with their history and self-conceptions. In the process, they would drive the creation of NATO, the European Union, and a Western identity that continue to shape world events. Benn Steil's "thoroughly researched and well-written account" (USA TODAY) tells the story behind the birth of the Cold War, told with verve, insight, and resonance for today. Focusing on the critical years 1947 to 1949, Benn Steil's gripping narrative takes us through the seminal episodes marking the collapse of postwar US-Soviet relations--the Prague coup, the Berlin blockade, and the division of Germany. In each case, Stalin's determination to crush the Marshall Plan and undermine American power in Europe is vividly portrayed. Bringing to bear fascinating new material from American, Russian, German, and other European archives, Steil's account will forever change how we see the Marshall Plan. "Trenchant and timely...an ambitious, deeply researched narrative that...provides a fresh perspective on the coming Cold War" (The New York Times Book Review), The Marshall Plan is a polished and masterly work of historical narrative. An instant classic of Cold War literature, it "is a gripping, complex, and critically important story that is told with clarity and precision" (TheChristian Science Monitor).

When Simon Steil was four years old, his mother, father, and brother were taken from their home in Antwerp, Belgium by the Nazis, and he never saw them again. Simon spent the next seven years moving between several orphanages and the home of a Belgian family who took him in for a time, until he was sent for in 1950 by relatives in the United States. At the Belgian passport office where he applied for his separation papers, he learned his date of birth and the proper spelling of his last name for the first time. He had just turned twelve. One of Simon's few memories from his early childhood was being at a deportation center where there was an old piano, and a group of people who would gather around it and sing as they waited for the Nazis to decide their fate. He could only recall these lines from their song: A tu conte les etoiles dans le ciel radieux? "Have you counted the stars in the radiant sky?"
With his emigration to America, Simon began a lifelong journey to find out the story of his childhood and his family. Where had he lived once they had vanished from his life? Who were they? What was their family history? And what, finally, had happened to them? In this volume is the picture of their lives that he pieced together over the course of decades, with a combination of research, hope, and sheer persistence, so that his children--and their children--could carry his story with them into the future.
Описание: There are extraordinary moments when people set aside their self-interest to take action that will benefit something larger than themselves: their extended family, company, community, or country. These moments are enormously important; they result from a deep and natural response to challenging conditions, a response that leads to solutions better than compromise. From Silicon Valley to villages in rural Asia, author Gil Steil has employed this natural collaboration response in leading summit meetings of all shapes and sizes for three decades. Within this book Gil presents eight simple axioms, which, when employed by leaders, enable the emergence of agreement and effective action in even the most horrendous of times.Stories that are true and surprisingly readable educate the reader about the social psychology of collaboration, and then the author shares genuinely practical tools for leading your own strategic planning meetings that elicit the collaboration response.
