Описание: An unforgettable story of discovery and unimaginable destruction and a major biography of one of America's most brilliant--and most divisive--scientists, Robert Oppenheimer: A Life Inside the Center vividly illuminates the man who would go down in history as "the father of the atomic bomb." Oppenheimer's talent and drive secured him a place in the pantheon of great physicists and carried him to the laboratories where the secrets of the universe revealed themselves. But they also led him to contribute to the development of the deadliest weapon on earth, a discovery he soon came to fear. His attempts to resist the escalation of the Cold War arms race--coupled with political leanings at odds with post-war America--led many to question his loyalties, and brought down upon him the full force of McCarthyite anti-communism. Digging deeply into Oppenheimer's past to solve the enigma of his motivations and his complex personality, Ray Monk uncovers the extraordinary, charming, tortured man--and the remarkable mind--who fundamentally reshaped the world.

Описание: A striking look at the Jewish rite-and at American Jews in all their diversity. Thirteen years ago, Mark Oppenheimer set off throughout the United States to see how the bar and bat mitzvah were practiced in different regions, by different boys and girls, from different streams of Judaism. That book, "Thirteen and a Day," is now being republished on its thirteenth birthday-its bar mitzvah-as "The Bar Mitzvah Crasher."Since its emergence here a century ago, the bar or bat mitzvah has become a distinctively American rite of passage, so much so that, in certain suburbs today, gentile families throw parties for their thirteen-year-olds, lest they feel left out. How did this come about? To answer that question, Mark Oppenheimer set out across America to attend the most distinctive b'nai mitzvah he could find. "The Bar Mitzvah Crasher" is the story of what he found-an altogether fresh look at American Jews today. Beginning with the image of a party of gaudy excess, Oppenheimer then goes farther afield in the great tradition of literary journalists from Joseph Mitchell to Ian Frazier and Susan Orlean. The two dozen Jews of Fayetteville, Arkansas, he finds, open their synagogue to eccentrics from all over the Ozarks. Those of Lake Charles, Louisiana, pass the hat to cover the expenses of their potluck dinner. And in Anchorage, Alaska, a Hasidic boy's bar mitzvah in a snowed-in hotel becomes a striking image of how far the Jewish diaspora has spread. In these people's company, privy to their soul-searching about their religious heritage, Oppenheimer finds that the day is full of wonder and significance. Part travelogue, part spiritual voyage, "The Bar Mitzvah Crasher" is a lyrical, entertaining, even revelatory look at American Jews and one of the most original books of literary journalism to appear in some years.
Описание: Abstract: The results of the calculations of extremely accurate wave functions for the ground state of two helium atoms, including energies obtained from these wave functions, are presented herein. These energies provide a variational upper bound to the Born-Oppenheimer potential curve for this system. The necessary expectation values were calculated by biased Monte Carlo techniques at seven internuclear distances. The energy obtained from the trial wave function at the potential minimum is -11.6149685 0.0000030 Ry giving a well depth of -7.10 0.30 x 10 -5 Ry at the nuclear separation distance of 5.6 Bohr radii (a"). It is estimated that this energy is above the energy of the exact wave function by no more than 1.8 x 10 -6 Ry. The extremely small Monte Carlo standard deviation (a) of 3.0 x 10 Ry was made possible through a combination of the three factors: 1. Evaluation of the integrands for many (over 10 ) Monte Carlo points. For the seven internuclear distances this took a total of about 50 hours of CPU time on an Amdahl 47 0/V6. 2. Monte Carlo methods (which allowed for analytic removal of all singularities) for finding good weight function. 3. The extremely accurate wave functions reported herein. These wave functions, in fact, were found by minimizing, rather than the energy (), the standard deviation in this energy (a) which is zero for a perfect wave function. This enabled us to optimize the set of values for the 2 9 variational parameters by using very few Monte Carlo points and, therefore, made this step financially feasible. Monte Carlo evaluation of the integrals allows total freedom to choose a natural and concise expansion for the wave functions. The wave functions used combine Schwartz's 189-term Hylleraas-type atomic wave function with molecular terms containing dipole-dipole, dipole-quadrupole, and further terms in the expansion of the interatomic potential energy. The Born-Oppenheimer potential curve found in this work is in rough agreement with the experimental results of Burgmans, Farrar, and Lee (BFL) . The greatest departure is at the nuclear separation distance of 5.6 ab, where the potential found is 1.3a below the BFL result of -6.70 Ry. Therefore the upper bound found herein should be considered to be in agreement with the BFL potential curve with just a hint that the exact curve is deeper than the BFL curve. Описание: From the founders of the international health-care behemoth Johnson & Johnson in the late 1800s to the contemporary Johnsons of today, such as billionaire New York Jets owner Robert Wood "Woody" Johnson IV, all is revealed in this scrupulously researched, unauthorized biography by New York Times bestselling author Jerry Oppenheimer. Often compared to the Kennedy clan because of the tragedies and scandals that had befallen both wealthy and powerful families, Crazy Rich, based on scores of exclusive, candid, on-the-record interviews, reveals how the dynasty's vast fortune was both intoxicating and toxic through the generations of a family that gave the world Band-Aids and Baby Oil. At the same time, they've been termed perhaps the most dysfunctional family in the fortune 500. Oppenheimer is the author of biographies of the Kennedys, the Clintons, the Hiltons and Martha Stewart, among other American icons.
The story of the twentieth century is largely the story of the power of science and technology. Within that story is the incredible tale of the human conflict between three men-Robert Oppenheimer, Ernest Lawrence, and Edward Teller-the scientists most responsible for the advent of weapons of mass destruction. How did science, enlisted in the service of the state during the Second World War, become a slave to its patron during the Cold War-and scientists with it? The story of these three men, is fundamentally about loyalty-to the country, to science, and to each other-and about the wrenching choices that had to be made when these allegiances came into conflict.
Gregg Herken gives us the behind-the-scenes account based upon a decade of research, interviews, and new documents. Brotherhood of the Bomb is a vital slice of American history told authoritatively-and grippingly-for the first time.
