Описание: The year 1944 saw a great deal of Marine Corps activity. The early defeats suffered by America in the Pacific were past; the pivotal naval battle for Midway had been won, and the Solomon Islands had fallen once again to the Allies. As 1944 dawned, a new Marine Corps - organised, trained and armed for the coming battles - prepared to launch itself into the outer defenses of a still defiant Japan.
In this book, the 1944 re-organisation of Marine units is studied in detail, including the implementation and history behind the "fire team" concept that is still a key factor in Marine organisation and tactics today.
Описание: This is the second of three volumes covering the transformation of the Fleet Air Arm during the Second World War. As the subtitle of this volume 'The Fleet Air Arm in Transition' suggests, the years 1942-1943 marked a stepping stone between the small pre-war cadre operating from a small number of carriers to a naval air arm flying modern aircraft types from a large number of ships and as will be seen in Volume III capable of operating a number of Fleet Carriers in the Pacific Ocean for sustained periods. Whereas the majority of Volume I dealt with operations, this volume has a much more even balance covering planning and policy on the one hand and operations on the other.
This reflects the crucial nature of this period as the development and expansion of the Fleet Air Arm gathered pace, whilst an increasingly diverse range of operations took place with those in the Mediterranean and the Atlantic reaching a climax. The reader will gain a clear appreciation of the growing importance, indeed primacy, of the aircraft carrier within the proposals for the future composition of Royal Navy's surface fleet together with the nature of the Fleet Air Arm's expansion programmes. Such expansion programmes were hindered by the constraints of aircraft production and the acquisition of sufficient shore facilities for the formation of new squadrons and the continued support of others.
Some of the Fleet Air Arm's most famous operations occurred during these years such as the escort of the 'Pedestal' convoy to Malta, air cover for the landings in North Africa, Sicily and at Salerno and the gallant, but ill-fated attack of 825 Squadron during the Channel Dash. The increasing role played by the Fleet Air Arm aircraft operating from Escort Carriers and Merchant Aircraft Carriers in the Battle of the Atlantic during 1943 is also apparent. The documents in this volume will bring to life the difficulties of operating aircraft at sea, the nature of air combat and the complexities involved in expanding an organisation such as the Fleet Air Arm under wartime conditions.
As such it will enhance our understanding of the history of the Royal Navy's air arm during the Second World War.
Описание: Continuing his magisterial account of the Eastern Front campaigns, David M. Glantz focuses here on the Red Army`s operations from the fall of 1943 to April 1944. Glantz chronicles the Soviet Army`s efforts to further exploit their post-Kursk gains and accelerate a counteroffensive that would eventually take them all the way to Berlin.

Описание: "Superb . . . Hamilton brilliantly sets out Roosevelt's foresight, determination and skill in establishing a new world order." --Fareed Zakaria, Washington Post
"Provocative . . . stimulating to follow." --Thomas E. Ricks, New York Times Book Review
1943 was the year of Allied military counteroffensives, beating back the forces of the Axis powers in North Africa and the Pacific--the "Hinge of Fate," as Winston Churchill called it. In Commander in Chief Nigel Hamilton reveals FDR's true role in this saga: overruling his own Joint Chiefs of Staff, ordering American airmen on an ambush of the Japanese navy's Admiral Yamamoto, facing down Churchill when he attempted to abandon Allied D-day strategy (twice). This FDR is profoundly different from the one Churchill later painted. President Roosevelt's patience was tested to the limit quelling the Prime Minister's "revolt," as Churchill pressured Congress and senior American leaders to focus Allied energy on disastrous fighting in Italy and the Aegean instead of landings in Normandy. Finally, in a dramatic showdown at Hyde Park, FDR had to stop Churchill from losing the war by making the ultimate threat, setting the Allies on their course to final victory.
In Commander in Chief, Hamilton masterfully chronicles the clash of nations--and of two titanic personalities--at a crucial moment in modern history.
"The rebuttal to the Churchill multivolume history . . . The war retains its power to shock and surprise." -- Boston Globe
Описание: On October 27, 1943, a force of New Zealanders and Americans invaded the Treasury Islands in the South Pacific, retaking them from their Japanese occupiers. Codenamed Operation Goodtime, the action marked the first time New Zealand forces took part in an opposed landing since Gallipoli in 1915. In an unusual allocation of troops in the American-dominated theater, New Zealand provided the fighting men and America the air, naval, and logistical support. Confronting extreme risks against a determined Japanese foe, the Allies nevertheless succeeded with relatively few casualties. Due to the needs for operational security, Operation Goodtime received little publicity and has been relegated to a footnote in the history of the war in the Pacific. This first complete account of the Allied seizure of the Treasury Islands stands as a tribute to the warriors who fought in this struggle.
