Описание:
Smart Technologies for Sustainable Smallholder Agriculture: Upscaling in Developing Countries defines integrated climate smart agricultural technologies (ICSAT) as a suite of interconnected techniques and practices that enhance quantity and quality of agricultural products with minimum impact on the environment. These ICSAT are centered on three main pillars, increased production and income, adaptation and resilience to climate change, and minimizing GHG emissions.
This book brings together technologies contributing to the three pillars, explains the context in which they can be scaled up, and identifies research and development gaps as areas requiring further investigation. It stresses the urgency in critically analyzing and recommending ICSAT and scaling out the efforts of both developing and disseminating these in an integrated manner.
The book discusses, synthesizes, and offers alternative solutions to agriculture production systems and socio-economic development. It brings together biophysical and socioeconomic disciplines in evaluating suitable ICSAT in an effort to help reduce poverty and food insecurity.
Highlights the research gaps and opportunities on climate smart agricultural technologies and institutional arrangements
Provides information on institutional engagements that are inclusive of value chain actors that support partnerships and the development of interactive platforms
Elaborates some of the effects of climate extremes on production and socioeconomic development on small farms whose impact has potentially large impact
Описание: A practical tool for implementing the sustainable food value chain framework with a focus on small-scale livestock producers, targeting an audience of project design teams and policymakers.
Описание: Innovation in agriculture has been critical to developing East Asia's economic transformation. The focus on productivity has come at a cost to environmental sustainability, however. This report examines the potential that a new generation of agricultural innovation holds for addressing these challenges and outlines an agenda for public action.

Описание: This book examines the impacts of poor diets and nutrition from current food systems and the potential contribution of biodiversity and ecosystem services in addressing these problems. Built from the Biodiversity for Food and Nutrition (BFN) Project, it reveals key lessons for the development of sustainable and healthy food systems.
Описание: This book argues for a broader approach to sustainable growth in Small Island Developing States (SIDS). This book will be of great interest to scholars and practitioners of economic geography, sustainable development, development studies and the creative industries.
Описание: In this wide-ranging collection, eminent scholars, theologians, activists, and lay farmers illuminate how religious beliefs influence and are influenced by the values and practices of sustainable agriculture.
In agricultural education and research, the study of agricultural microbiology has undergone tremendous changes in the past few decades, leading to today's scientific farming that is a backbone of economy all over the globe. Microorganisms in Sustainable Agriculture, Food, and the Environment fills the need for a comprehensive volume on recent advances and innovations in microbiology. The book is divided into four main parts: food microbiology; soil microbiology; environmental microbiology, and industrial microbiology and microbial biotechnology.

Описание: India is a fast developing economy whose natural resource base, comprising land and water supporting agricultural production, are not only under enormous stress, but also complex and not amenable to a uniform strategy. This book addresses strategies for food security and sustainable agriculture in India, including lessons to be learned in other developing economies across the world.

Описание: As large-scale industrial agriculture comes under increasing scrutiny because of its petroleum- and petrochemical-based input costs and environmentally objectionable consequences, increasing attention has been focused on sustainable, local, and agro-ecological techniques in food production. Cuba was forced by historical circumstances to be one of the pioneers in the massive application of these techniques. After the demise of the Soviet Union in the early 1990s, Cuba was left without access to external support needed to carry on with industrial agriculture. The economic crisis led the country to reconsider their former models of resource management. Cuba retooled its agricultural programs to focus on urban agriculture—sustainable, ecologically sound farming close to densely populated areas. Food now takes far less time to get to the people, who are now better nourished because they have easier access to whole foods. Moreover, urban farming has become a source of national pride—Cuba has one of the best urban agriculture programs in the world, with a thousand-fold increase in urban agricultural output since 1994.Sinan Koont has spent the last several years researching urban agriculture in Cuba, including field work at many sustainable farms on the island. He tells the story of why and how Cuba was able to turn to urban food production on a large scale with minimal use of chemicals, petroleum, and machinery, and of the successes it achieved—along with the continuing difficulties it still faces in reducing its need for food imports.
