Описание: Examines the relationship of Apollonius of Rhodes` Argonautica with Herodotus` Histories. Argues that it uses Herodotean historiography as a key intertext in order to manipulate the reader`s generic expectations for an epic poem and to complicate the relationship between the contemporary Hellenistic Mediterranean and the distant mythological past.

Laura Marshall Jamieson (1882–1964) was the last suffragist in Canada to be elected to a provincial or federal legislature, and her biography opens a window onto the political and social landscape of her time. Описание: Much has been written about the legendary times of John Marshall, the longest serving chief justice in Supreme Court history, but little is known about the love of his life, his 'dearest Polly'. Polly was shy and retiring and stayed in the background, but she was known as his closest confidant and advisor. This book show how the enduring love that began during the Revolutionary War when Polly was only fourteen lasted and strengtened despite the turbulant times they faced both in war and peace. Their life together mirrors the time when Richmond, the new capital of Virginia, grew from a primitive village to a thriving port city, and the early bungalows, built to house legislators when the capital moved to Richmond during the war, were replaced by "plantations-in-town". This book gives a rich and graphic picture of life in the new United States and of events impacting the lives of those dominant people who determined the nation's future during the late 18th and early 19th centuries.

Shaykh Mithqal al-Fayiz's life spanned a period of dramatic transformation in the Middle East. Born in the 1880s during a time of rapid modernization across the Ottoman Empire, Mithqal led his tribe through World War I, the development and decline of colonial rule and founding of Jordan, the establishment of the state of Israel and the Arab-Israeli conflict that ensued, and the rise of pan-Arabism. As Mithqal navigated regional politics over the decades, he redefined the modern role of the shaykh.
In following Mithqal's remarkable life, this book explores tribal leadership in the modern Middle East more generally. The support of Mithqal's tribe to the Jordanian Hashemite regime extends back to the creation of Jordan in 1921 and has characterized its political system ever since. The long-standing alliances between tribal elites and the royal family explain, to a large extent, the extraordinary resilience of Hashemite rule in Jordan and the country's relative stability. Mithqal al-Fayiz's life and work as a shaykh offer a notable individual story, as well as a unique window into the history, society, and politics of Jordan.

Описание: Through an analysis of Dante`s story of Paolo and Francesco, this book combines contemporary ethical theory, literary interpretation, and historical narrative to defend the humanities as a source of moral guidance.
Margaret Garner was the runaway slave who, when confronted with capture just outside of Cincinnati, slit the throat of her toddler daughter rather than have her face a life in slavery. Her story has inspired Toni Morrison’s Beloved, a film based on the novel starring Oprah Winfrey, and an opera. Yet, her life has defied solid historical treatment. In Driven toward Madness, Nikki M. Taylor brilliantly captures her circumstances and her transformation from a murdering mother to an icon of tragedy and resistance.
Taylor, the first African American woman to write a history of Garner, grounds her approach in black feminist theory. She melds history with trauma studies to account for shortcomings in the written record. In so doing, she rejects distortions and fictionalized images; probes slavery’s legacies of sexual and physical violence and psychic trauma in new ways; and finally fleshes out a figure who had been rendered an apparition.

Описание: In the nineteenth and twentieth centuries many millions of Irish people left their homeland in search of a better life overseas. This is the story of one emigrant, John Joseph -Jack- Griffin who, in the year 1900, left his job as a shop assistant in Co. Kerry and embarked on a two-month journey by sea to the other side of the world. He settled in Western Australia and having worked as a drover for a number of years finally became the owner of a 200,000 acre sheep station. In 1909 he married Mary Glass, an immigrant from Northern Ireland. Following the untimely death of his wife he enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force and fought in the battlefields of France during World War I. He was wounded in action in 1916 and returned to Western Australia where he lived until his death in 1926. This book describes Jack's life in the context of the historical events of the period.
