Описание: The purpose of this book is to provide public health, disability, and rehabilitation professionals and practitioners evidence-based science with respect to health disparities faced by people with disabilities, especially people with mobility limitations; alternative methods of rehabilitation and exercise science for this population; assistive device technology; and, improved access to health care, employment, and social participation.According to the National Institute on Disability, Independent Living, and Rehabilitation Research (NIDILRR), approximately 57 million Americans live with a disability. Disability severity and types vary considerably, such that each individual with a disability faces unique physical, social, and environmental barriers in order to enjoy quality of life and full participation in society. A large research literature shows that people with disabilities face substantial employment and health disparities compared to people without disabilities. People with mobility limitations often experience secondary conditions to compound their primary disability. Hollar (2013) and Hollar and Lewis (2015) showed that people with mobility limitations were significantly more likely to experience obesity and lack of access to physical exercise. Other studies have shown that access to proper physical examination facilities and equipment remain a substantial barrier in many clinics and hospitals despite the enactment of the Americans with Disabilities Act 25 years ago. Research on alternative exercise programs and new assistive device technologies offers promise to improve physical functioning and exercise for people with mobility limitations. Furthermore, increased focus on biopsychosocial over traditional medical models for disability will help policymakers and the public to recognize the complex, contextual issues (e.g., personal, social, environmental) that affect the lives of people with disabilities.Readership includes public health practitioners and educators, disability and rehabilitation researchers, clinicians and sports medicine practitioners, and disability advocates. There have been general handbooks on disability, but advances in technology and alternative exercise programs, as well as novel disability health programs, are dispersed in the research literature. This book will help to highlight these programs for health policy experts, especially given the high health and social disparities experienced by this population.
Описание: An evidence-based guide, this book presents an in-depth analysis of the independent and positive effects of resistance training on the prevention, management, and treatment of many chronic conditions. Written by some of the world’s leading exercise physiologists and resistance training experts, the chapters provide detailed descriptions of the benefits of resistance training for specific clinical populations, including guidelines on how to construct a tailored resistance training prescription. Chapters cover resistance training to treat cardiovascular disease, metabolic diseases, cancer, orthopedic diseases, neuromuscular disorders, and more.

Описание: Vitamin D deficiency, circulating levels lower than 15 ng/ml, is an epidemic disease worldwide with more than a billion people suffering of it in the beginning of the 21-century. Besides its impact on mineral and bone metabolism, these low vitamin D levels are also associated with a diversity of non-skeletal complications, among them cardiovascular disease, diabetes mellitus, multiple sclerosis, cancer, tuberculosis, and immune system dysfunction. Chronic Kidney Disease is also a very common disease, affecting more than 10% of the world population, ranging from stage 1 to stage 5 before dialysis. Approximately 1% of the population in industrialized countries is affected by end-stage renal disease (ESRD), needing a renal replacement therapy either hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis, and ultimately by renal transplantation. Those CKD patients are more susceptible to exhibit reduced vitamin D stocks. Consequently, more than eighty percent of CKD patients have either insufficient or deficient vitamin D levels for multiple reasons.
Описание: Practitioners should always develop exercise prescription with consideration for an individual's health history, but this is especially true for individuals with a history of chronic disease. Exercise Prescription for Special Populations: Chronic Disease, Unique Populations, and Challenging Diagnosis delves into how practitioners should prescribe exercise for those with conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, and hypertension, as well as for those who are pregnant, wheelchair-dependent, or adolescents. Exercise Prescription for Special Populations utilizes a hybrid approach, combining elements of a traditional textbook and a "field guide" reference, with summative tables at the end of each chapter fulfilling the latter function. This reference aspect makes this text an ideal fit not just for upper-level undergraduate and graduate-level Exercise Science students, but also for exercise physiologists and personal fitness trainers working in fitness centers, hospitals, and in-/out-patient cardiac rehabilitation programs.
