This book examines the Zoroastrian community in the late Qajar and early Pahlavi period beyond the borders of Iran to trace this Parsi-Persian relationship. A major theme is the increase in philanthropy directed to the Zoroastrians of Iran by the Parsis and the involvement of the British in encouraging Parsi feelings of patriotism towards Iran. The book shows that not only were Parsis effected by events taking place in Iran, they also contributed to the broader change in attitudes towards Zoroastrians in that country. Using a variety of original sources from Britain, India and Iran, Alexandra Buhler looks at the political, legal, and social position of Zoroastrians in Iran and how different events impacted their attitudes as well as the attitudes of Parsis towards their ancestral homeland. Of particular significance, this book shows, are the seminal years of the Iranian Constitutional Revolution (1906-11) and the rise in the glorification of the pre-Islamic past, which culminated in the state nationalism expounded by Reza Shah. These political moments had a profound impact on how Zoroastrians in India felt about their future in the country and reveal a complex web of relations between the Parsis, the Zoroastrians of Iran, and the British.

Jones provides the first English language translation of one of the most important texts of modern Chinese Buddhism: monk-reformer Taixu’s ‘On the Establishment of the Pure Land in the Human Realm’. The essay, written in 1926 as part of Taixu’s attempt to revive Chinese Buddhism with a Humanistic Buddhist approach, incorporates Western thought into a reconstruction of the idea of the ‘Pure Land in the human realm’. In his commentary on the text, Jones argues that it has been widely misunderstood and mischaracterized.
Jones demonstrates that, besides laying out the very modern idea of the Pure Land in the human realm as a slogan for Buddhist engagement with the problems of the modern world, the essay does not, as commonly assumed, discourage practices leading to rebirth in the Pure Land. He also shows that the ‘human realm’ can mean anywhere in Buddhist cosmology that humans reside, and that the essay’s attempts to reconcile Buddhism with modern science is tentative and incomplete. Jones reveals that the essay promotes visions of both paradises and utopias, and that Taixu supports his ideas with many lengthy sutra quotations. Yoshitsugu Sawai shows how Otto has "three faces" the Lutheran Theologian, the Philosopher of Religion, and the Comparative Religionist. The book also shows how, of these, Otto saw himself primarily as a Lutheran Theologian, and provides an account of Otto's engagement with India and the centrality that Hindu theology had on his thinking. In Otto's theory of religion, his well-known concepts including "wholly other" and "numinous" constitute a multiple structure of meaning. For example, his concept of the "wholly other" (das ganz Andere) no doubt has the meaning of "God" in his Christian theological studies. At the same time, however, from the perspective of comparative religion or the phenomenology of religion, this same term semantically implies the "ultimate reality" of other religious traditions; "Brahman" and "God" (Isvara) in Hindu religious tradition as well as "God" in Christianity.
