Описание:
Since library instruction's very beginnings librarians and writing instructors have been natural partners. Library-writing program connections illustrate that both writing and information seeking and use (information literacy) share powerful links: both are central to posing and exploring problems and questions and to seeking informed and creative approaches to them. Thus, at the heart of writing and information literacy are inquiry and critical thinking, which many college educators across disciplines view to be at the center of learning. But despite these intersections, there is still a strong tendency for English composition and library instruction to be taught in relative separation, with the latter frequently being viewed as a course "add-on." Similarly, conversations about writing and information literacy pedagogy have tended to exist in professional silos. Fortunately, dialogue across our professions has begun to expand at what appears an unprecedented pace, as librarians become increasingly vocal about the need for information literacy to be an integral part of college education and as librarians expand their engagement with learning theories and conceptual frameworks for information literacy.
This book is intended to help widen and deepen the conversations between librarians and compositionists. How can we further build and strengthen teaching partnerships that invite students to engage in writing and information seeking and use as processes of inquiry, critical reflection, and meaning making? And what sometimes stands in the way of doing do? Written for both librarians and writing instructors, this publication considers these questions from multiple angles, including through explorations of:
empirical research on student writing and information literacy development;
intersections between and pedagogical implications of the ACRL Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education and the WPA Framework for Success in Postsecondary Writing;
interviews with librarian-compositionists partners about their collaborative experiences;
historical, social, cultural, and structural contexts that influence librarians and writing instructors' work environments and cultures, and ultimately the potential for partnership; and
the power of reflective pedagogical praxis.
While considering the possibilities for and challenges to library-writing partnerships from these different vantage points, the author invite readers to continue exploring this area of inquiry in conversations and teaching at and beyond their local institutions.

Books have the power to shape the way we think. Stories--reading them, writing them, and sharing them--give us new lenses through which to view the world and the people we encounter. In short, words matter.
In Sparks in the Dark, Travis Crowder and Todd Nesloney share their experiences as educators who purposefully seek to spark a love for reading and writing in the learners they serve. The reason is simple: Writing and reading have the power to change the trajectory of a life.
Through the stories and real-life examples they share, the authors light the way to . . .
Incorporating literacy skills in every subject in engaging ways.
Empowering students and staff to ask and explore tough questions about the world.
Encouraging learners at all levels to choose to read books that challenge them.
Taking responsibility to seek and share learning for everyone's benefit.
More standards, tests, and mandates are not the answer to improving literacy. Sparking a fire--a passion--for words, stories, and self-expression in learners is the surest path to instilling a lifelong love of learning. Let's light up the darkness
"Sparks in the Dark is a high-energy drink for teachers. Travis Crowder and Todd Nesloney invite readers to rethink (and, yes, discard) hidebound traditions and to open classrooms to choice, passion, and authenticity." --Thomas Newkirk, founder of The New Hampshire Literacy Institutes
"Sparks in the Dark won't stay long on your bookshelf; it will linger in your hands and will last longer in your thoughts." --Kylene Beers, coauthor of Notice and Note, Reading Nonfiction, and Disrupting Thinking
"Travis and Todd have crafted a beautiful (and practical) narrative of their teaching lives." --Sara K. Ahmed, author, speaker, and literacy Coach at NIST International School, Bangkok, Thailand
"Travis and Todd are both passionate educators who are continually rethinking and changing their teaching practices based on what they know about their students and themselves as readers, writers, and learners." --Linda Rief, author of Read Write Teach

Описание:
The underlying premise of the Getting to Grips with English Grammar scheme is that pupils need to see how authors use grammar and have opportunities to use it in their own writing for them to truly understand it. Throughout the series, entertaining reading passages introduce pupils to key grammar points and provide talking points for how the grammar is used. Engaging activities, all linked to the themes of the reading passages, provide reinforcement and enable children to practise using the grammar in their own writing.
Mini quizzes at the end of each theme assess how much they have remembered. Answers at the back of the book make checking children's work easy.
Getting to Grips with English Grammar, Year 5 is a flexible resource for teaching grammar in Key Stage 2. It introduces pupils to grammar and punctuation through fun, engaging themes, such as The Sky Walkway and Puffin Rest Cove. The six books in the series provides complete coverage of the grammar and punctuation Programmes of Study for the National Curriculum for England. Grammar and punctuation rules are systematically introduced, revisited and consolidated, ensuring that pupils become confident at using grammar.
