Описание:
Written by a pediatrician/adolescent medicine specialist and a developmental psychologist, this book is a collection of informative, nonredundant yet comprehensive studies on adolescent pregnancy and parenting. More than 200 adolescent women in an ethnically diverse sample were studied prenatally and at regular 6-month intervals for 31/2 years postpartum. Most of the teens were poor, unmarried, first-time mothers who resided within Southeast San Diego, a poor urban area approximately 10 miles north of the U.S.-Mexico border.
The purpose of this book was to offer researchers, practitioners, program directors, teachers, and graduate and medical students a better understanding of teenage pregnancy and parenthood within the following domains: * adolescent prenatal care and postpartum maternal and infant health outcomes, * immediate repeat pregnancy, * adolescent mothers' parenting, * the role of the adolescent's mother in teenage mothers' parenting, and * the baby's father.

Описание: Based on a two-year study that followed boys from pre-kindergarten through first grade, When Boys Become Boys offers a new way of thinking about boys’ development. Through focusing on a critical moment of transition in boys’ lives, Judy Y. Chu reveals boys’ early ability to be emotionally perceptive, articulate, and responsive in their relationships, and how these “feminine” qualities become less apparent as boys learn to prove that they are boys primarily by showing that they are not girls. Chu finds that behaviors typically viewed as “natural” for boys reflect an adaptation to cultures that require boys to be stoic, competitive, and aggressive if they are to be accepted as “real boys.” Yet even as boys begin to reap the social benefits of aligning with norms of masculine behavior, they pay a psychological and relational price for renouncing parts of their humanity. Chu documents boys’ perceptions of the obstacles they face and the pressures they feel to conform, showing that compliance with rules of masculinity is neither automatic nor inevitable. This accessible and engaging book provides insight into ways in which adults can foster boys’ healthy resistance and help them to access a broader range of options as they seek to connect with others while remaining true to themselves.

Описание: Drawing on interviews and focus groups with young mothers and fathers, their parents and other relatives, this book provides a rich exploration of the experience of being a teenage parent now, and for earlier generations, closely examining teenage pregnancy and parenting in families where two or more generations have been teenage mothers. Brown also explores the cultural and social contexts of teenage parenting by including the views of people who have many years’ experience of working with young parents in health, social and welfare settings. The book challenges policy contexts which focus on negative aspects of teenage parenting, and shows that for many young people, parenting can be a positive experience. It will appeal to academics, policymakers and professionals with an interest in teenage pregnancy and parenting.
Описание: Parents can take simple and easy steps to protect their children from tragic injuries. Among US children ages 1 to 14, injuries cause more deaths than all other causes combined. Raising Kids Who Choose Safety addresses the severity of accidental injury as a child-health concern and introduces a groundbreaking new method, TAMS: Teach, Act, Model, Shape. This simple, step-by-step plan based on the latest scientific research instills a culture of safety in the household. Practical injury-prevention advice is presented by developmental stage, from the infant, toddler, and preschool years, to the elementary school and early adolescent years. Injury topics that span all age groups are covered as well: sports injuries, time with babysitters, during holidays, and much more. Parents learn the secrets to safety, gathering basic steps to safeguard their home, car, and yard. They also learn how to create safety in their household by modeling safe behavior, teaching children rules and skills to stay safe, and modeling a culture in which safety is practiced automatically by all family members. Raising Kids Who Choose Safety helps families avert tragedy, prevent the preventable, and stay injury free.

Описание: Editors Lewiecki-Wilson and Cellio have put together the first book to focus on the intersecting spaces, both cultural and personal, of disability and mothering. Derived from the Latin for threshold, the word "liminal" calls attention to the book’s focus on the transitional moments and spaces where the personal and social, inside and outside, self and other converge. The volume features twenty-one previously unpublished essays by new as well as established scholars and community activists. Contributors, some of whom are themselves disabled or mothers of children with disabilities, present moving personal accounts and accessible scholarship grounded in historical study, experiential and retrospective analysis, interviews, social research, and feminist and disability studies theories. In their introduction, the editors survey the theoretical frameworks of feminism and disability studies, locating the points of overlap crucial to a study of disability and mothering. Organized in five sections, the book engages questions about reproductive technologies; diagnoses and cultural scripts; the ability to rewrite narratives of mothering and disability; political activism; and the tensions formed by the overlapping identities of race, class, nation, and disability. The essays speak to a broad audience—from undergraduate and graduate students in women’s studies and disability studies, to therapeutic and health care professionals, to anyone grappling with issues such as genetic testing and counseling, raising a child with a disability, or being disabled and contemplating starting a family.
