Underlying the chapters in The Work of Hospitals is a fundamental question: how do hospitals function lacking the medications, equipment and technologies, and personnel normally assumed to be necessary? This collection of ethnographies demonstrates how hospital administrators, clinicians, and other staff in hospitals around the world confront innumerable risks in their commitment to deliver health care, including civil unrest, widespread poverty, endemic and epidemic disease, and supply chain instability. Ultimately, The Work of Hospitals documents a vast gulf between the idealized mission of the hospital and the implementation of this mission in everyday practice. Hospitals thus become “contested space” between policy and practice.
The COVID-19 outbreak in Wuhan, Hubei, saw great numbers of patients overwhelming the admission capacity of designated infectious diseases hospitals, which in turn led to insufficient medical supplies fulfilling treatment needs. Hence, Zall Foundation proposed the construction of COVID-19 Emergency Hospitals to effectively respond to the surging number of COVID-19 cases. This involved the conversion of existing hospitals that have insufficient, or do not have admission capacities for infectious diseases patients, into emergency hospitals that solely focus on receiving suspected and confirmed COVID-19 cases. From January 30, 2020, Zall Foundation, along with professional medical institutions, reconstructed seven existing professional medical institutions into COVID-19 Emergency Hospitals in less than 10 days. In total, 4,583 wards were provided after renovation, where 2,833 confirmed and suspected COVID-19 patients were cured. The COVID-19 Emergency Hospitals have played an important role in China's epidemic prevention and control by efficiently easing the problems of insufficient ward beds and inadequate admission capacities of infectious diseases hospitals.
Based on the experience of construction and operation of the emergency hospitals which are designed in strict adherence to relevant medical standards and regulations, this manual has been compiled by the Zall Foundation. It aims to provide useful reference to the reconstruction of existing hospitals and practice of expanding medical resources for all other regions around the world, to effectively contribute to pandemic control. The manual has been translated into more than 20 languages.

Based on ethnographic observations of and in-depth interviews with obstetrical nurses and hospital administrators at a community, not-for-profit hospital in New England, Health Care in Crisis examines how nurses' care of patients changed over the three-year period in which the Affordable Care Act was implemented, state Medicaid funds to hospitals were slashed, and hospitals were being acquired by a for-profit hospital system. Morris explains how the tumultuous political-economic changes have challenged obstetrical nurses, who are at the front lines of providing care for women during labor and birth. In the context of a new environment where hospital reimbursements are tied to performance, nursing has come under much scrutiny as documentation of births--already laboriously high--has reached even greater levels. Providing patient-centered care is an organizational challenge that nurses struggle to master in this context. Some nurses become bogged down by new processes and bureaucratic procedures, while others focus on buffering patients from the effects of these changes with little success.
