Описание:
How did we come to have minds? For centuries, poets, philosophers, psychologists, and physicists have wondered how the human mind developed its unrivaled abilities. Disciples of Darwin have explained how natural selection produced plants, but what about the human mind?
In From Bacteria to Bach and Back, Daniel C. Dennett builds on recent discoveries from biology and computer science to show, step by step, how a comprehending mind could in fact have arisen from a mindless process of natural selection. A crucial shift occurred when humans developed the ability to share memes, or ways of doing things not based in genetic instinct. Competition among memes produced thinking tools powerful enough that our minds don't just perceive and react, they create and comprehend.
An agenda-setting book for a new generation of philosophers and scientists, From Bacteria to Bach and Back will delight and entertain all those curious about how the mind works.

Описание: Explores the nature, origin, and extent of life in the universe from both scientific and philosophical perspectives, focusing particularly on the challenge of formulating a universal theory of life in relation to the search for extraterrestrial life. It is a valuable resource for those studying astrobiology and the origins of life.

Описание: Modern immunology traditionally conceives of the immune system as providing defense against pathogens. Alfred I. Tauber criticizes this conception of immunity as too narrow, because it discounts much of the immune system's other normal functions. These include active tolerance of nutritional exchanges with the environment and the stabilization of cooperative relationships with resident micro-organisms. An expanded account extends immunity's functional role from singular 'defense' to broadened discernment of environmental 'exchange.' This ecological perspective has profound theoretical implications, for the basic notion of immune identity is reconfigured: highlighting the organism as a holobiont (a consortium of diverse organisms living in cooperative relationships) challenges prevailing concepts of individuality and the self/nonself dichotomy heretofore organizing immune theory. Indeed, if theoretical interest is focused on the challenges of maintaining immune balance in the full ecological context of the organism, then immune regulation assumes new complexity. Tauber maintains that the key to unravelling that puzzle requires a critical re-assessment of the cognitive processes that underlie immune effector functions. Accordingly, he provides the outline of a re-formulated 'cognitive paradigm' that dispenses with agent-based models and adopts an ecologically conceived understanding of perception and information processing. The implications of this revised configuration of immunity and its deconstructed notions of individuality and selfhood have wide significance for philosophers and life scientists working in immunology, ecology, and the cognitive sciences.

Описание: The scope of this book can be described best as a compilation of papers presented to an imaginary interdisciplinary conference on philosophical and material problems of biosocial evolution. The conference is espe- cially designed to discuss unifying theoretical approaches to pheno- mena of both increasing structural complexity ("natural self-organi- sation") and biosocial adaptation. Among the contributors to the confe- rence are mathematical system theoretists, philosophers of science, theoretical population biologists, and social scientists. The only diffe- rence to a real conference of this kind is that all contributions are deli- vered by one and the same author, who also tries to integrate them to some higher degree than can normally be attained in conference papers. Technically, this integration amounts to the embedding of the biobeha- vioural concepts of evolutionarily stable and unstable strategies into the framework of the structure and stability of hierarchical systems. When embarking on my work on philosophical and interdisciplinary problems of the life sciences about 6 years ago, I decided not to contri- bute to the obscurantist talk of - horribile dictu - "emergence," "onto- logical reductionism" and the like contaminating the recent sociobio- logy debate. I rather found it a genuinely philosophical task to analyse this talk, and so I attempted to recast the relevant concepts and princip- les into a form allowing for definite conclusions. Among other things, which I hope the reader will find more pleasant, this attempt had some unfortunate effect, however.

Описание: This book sheds new light on the problem of how the human mind evolved. Harry Smit argues that current explanations misguidedly use variants of the Cartesian conception of the mind. The author shows that combining the Aristotelian conception with Darwin`s theory provides us with far more interesting answers.

Описание: Published in 1903 and edited by his son Leonard Huxley, this three-volume set is the second, extended edition of the biography and selected letters of `Darwin`s Bulldog`, T. H. Huxley (1825-95). Volume 3 covers the period 1887-95, during which Huxley battled ill-health while continuing to defend his scientific ideals.

Описание: Challenging the common gene-centric approach to organisms, this book articulates a relativistic theory of biology. It is grounded in up-to-date biological research and rigorous application of mathematics to biology; however, it is presented in a non-technical manner for the general reader, and requires no familiarity with complex biology, mathematics or philosophy.

Описание: This volume is aimed at students and researchers in philosophy of science, evolutionary biology, economics and psychology who are interested in learning more about the subtle relationship between rational choice theory and Darwinian evolution. It explores this relationship in contexts such as strategic decision making and pro-social behaviour.

Описание: This book examines central topics in philosophy of biology, challenging the current evolutionary accounts of the female orgasm and analysing them for bias. It examines the concept of objectivity and the structure of evolutionary theory and unlocks the puzzle of the units of selection debates into four distinct aspects.

Описание: The author draws on a detailed knowledge of mutational mechanisms to argue that the randomness doctrine is best understood, not as a fact-based conclusion, but as the premise of a neo-Darwinian research program focused on selection.
