Описание: The culmination of years of work on Abraham Lincoln’s political thought, Michael Zuckert’s A Nation So Conceived argues for a coherent center to Lincoln’s political ideology, a core idea that unifies his thought and thus illuminates his deeds as a political actor. That core idea is captured in the term “democratic sovereignty.” Zuckert provides invaluable guidance to understanding both Lincoln and the politics of the United States between 1845 and Lincoln’s death in 1865 by focusing on roughly a dozen speeches that Lincoln made during his career. This reader-friendly chronological organization is motivated by Zuckert’s emphasis on Lincoln as a practical politician who was always fully aware of the political context of the moment within which he was speaking.According to Lincoln’s speech at Gettysburg, America was new precisely because it was born in dedication to the first premise of the theory of democratic sovereignty: that all men are created equal. Lincoln’s thought consisted in an ever-deepening meditation on the grounds and implications of that proposition, both in its constructive and in its destructive potential. The goodness of the American regime is derived from that ground and the chief dangers to the regime emanate from the same soil.Covering all significant speeches and writings of Lincoln both in his pre-presidential and presidential days, A Nation So Conceived is devoted to exploring the paradoxical duality of “created equal.” In a nearly comprehensive study of Lincoln’s thought, Zuckert uses lessons he learned from decades of teaching to reveal how Lincoln understood both its truth and its pathological consequences while offering an assessment of his aims and achievements as a statesman.

Описание:

"A Hidden Indictment: What the Slaves and Freedmen Knew About the Lincoln Assassination," provides the reader with a brief history of the development of the country, including major civil war battles, and a new perspective about the facts and events leading up to and surrounding the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln as seen through the eyes and ears of Slaves and Freedmen. The book tells the story of an African-American enslaved woman (Mary Simms), who testified as one of the chief government prosecution witnesses against the Lincoln assassination conspirators. The author is believed to be a distant relative of Mary Simms.

"Frazer Walton revisits the Lincoln assassination conspiracy with a fresh look at the testimony of a slave whose ignored comments could have widened the investigation had she been listened to by authorities. Walton's book delves into the shadowy world of spies, double-dealers, and politicians during the American Civil War. Proving the theories he brings up may be impossible 150 years later, but his research into old records makes for interesting speculation."
Clint Johnson, noted American Civil War author of eight books
on the civil war, including his well-known book the "Pursuit."

"Frazer Walton has fashioned an inspirational book, a page turner that will leave the reader gasping and asking for more. He has resurrected hidden American history for our consideration. And he has done it in the form of a griping and trilling mystery that will hold you spell bound until the last page. It is a remarkable and complex story, as it tells the truth about the assassination and the facts surrounding it, a truth that for all these years has remained hidden."
Mark Lane, was a famous trial attorney,
New York state legislator, civil rights activist and author.
He has written several New York Times Best sellers
(Rush to Judgment and Plausible Denial)
about the assassination of American President John F. Kennedy.

Описание:

Abraham Lincoln is often lauded as one of the greatest presidents in the history of the United States of America. His involvement in the Civil War and the abolition of slavery have led to the reverence of his name.

Having deep family roots in the United States, traceable to colonial times, author Dr. W. Terry Hardgrave has a long-held family interest in the principles and preservation of constitutional republics. As a young adult, Dr. Hardgrave began to discover inconsistencies in the traditional historical narrative surrounding the Civil War. He found himself asking the following questions:
How could President Lincoln promise to preserve the integrity of the States in his first Inaugural Address and invade Maryland less than two months later?
If the war was about abolishing slavery, why was General Grant's wife a slave-holder during the war?
If John Wilkes Booth was simply a pro-slavery Southern sympathizer, why did he yell, "Sic Semper Tyrannis," after shooting President Lincoln instead of "Slavery Forever" or "Dixie Forever" or something similar?
If President Lincoln actually preserved the Union, why did the States have to be re-admitted to the Union during Reconstruction?

It is those inconsistencies that led Dr. Hardgrave on his quest for more detail and more realistic answers. Civil Coercion: The Constitutional Violations of the Lincoln Administration (1861-1865) is the result of his inquiries into the official records, accounts, speeches, and other publications. Through this book, Dr. Hardgrave hopes to prompt readers into their own research by providing them with facts, using a minimum of biased opinion, regarding the Constitutional violations of the Lincoln administration.

Описание: Exploring Lincoln's Evolving Views of Citizenship   At its most basic level, citizenship is about who belongs to a political community, and for Abraham Lincoln in nineteenth-century America, the answer was in flux. The concept of 'fellow citizens,' for Lincoln, encompassed different groups at different times. In this first book focused on the topic, Mark E. Steiner analyzes and contextualizes Lincoln's evolving views about citizenship over the course of his political career.   As an Illinois state legislator, Lincoln subscribed to the by-then-outmoded belief that suffrage must be limited to those who met certain obligations to the state. He rejected the adherence to universal white male suffrage that had existed in Illinois since statehood. In 1836 Lincoln called for voting rights to be limited to white people who had served in the militia or paid taxes. Surprisingly, Lincoln did not exclude women, though later he did not advocate giving women the right to vote and did not take women seriously as citizens. The women at his rallies, he believed, served as decoration.   For years Lincoln presumed that only white men belonged in the political and civic community, and he saw immigration through this lens. Because Lincoln believed that white male European immigrants had a right to be part of the body politic, he opposed measures to lengthen the time they would have to wait to become a citizen or to be able to vote. Unlike many in the antebellum north, Lincoln rejected xenophobia and nativism. He opposed black citizenship, however, as he made clear in his debates with Stephen Douglas. Lincoln supported Illinois's draconian Black Laws, which prohibited free black men from voting and serving on juries or in the militia. Further, Lincoln supported sending free black Americans to Africa-the ultimate repudiation and an antithesis of citizenship.   Yet, as president, Lincoln came to embrace a broader vision of citizenship for African Americans. Steiner establishes how Lincoln's meetings at the White House with Frederick Douglass and other black leaders influenced his beliefs about colonization, which he ultimately disavowed, and citizenship for African Americans, which he began to consider. Further, the battlefield success of black Union soldiers revealed to Lincoln that black men were worthy of citizenship. Lincoln publicly called for limited suffrage among black men, including military veterans, in his speech about Reconstruction on April 11, 1865. Ahead of most others of his era, Lincoln showed just before his assassination that he supported rights of citizenship for at least some African Americans.

Описание: This book reinterprets the causes of the American Civil War. Using Abraham Lincoln and Stephen Douglas`s famed rivalry as a prism, Robert E. May shows that when Lincoln and fellow Republicans opposed slavery in the West, they did so partly because of evidence that slaveholders planned to make Cuba, Mexico, and Central America into new slave states.

Описание: At the end of the Civil War, a military court convicted Lambdin Milligan and his coconspirators of fomenting an insurrection and sentenced them to hang. On appeal, the US Supreme Court sided with the conspirators. This book argues the case affords an opportunity to reevaluate the history of wartime civil liberties from the Civil War to the present.
