Описание: It is now established that neuroglia are the intimate partners of neurons and that neuronal function is a result of neuron-glia interrelations at several levels of organization. The literature shows that the study of phylogeny has contributed a deeper understand- ing of the complex functions of the neuroglia and the neuron-glia unit. It is the purpose of Neuron-Glia Interrelations During Phylog- eny: I. Phylogeny and Ontogeny of Glial Cells, as well as its compan- ion volume Neuron-Glia Interrelations During Phylogeny: II. Plasticity and Regeneration, to present to the scientific community a broad spectrum of information on neuroglia through phylog- eny and ontogeny, the focus of this volume. In view of the role of neuroglia in plasticity and regeneration, the companion volume will cover this aspect of neuroglia during phylogeny. Neuron-Glia Interrelations During Phylogeny: I. Phylogeny and Ontogeny of Glial Cells begins with the elegant chapter "Glial Types, Gliogenesis, and Extracellular Matrix in Mammalian CNS" by Amico Bignami, to whom this volume is dedicated. He was one of the pioneers in describing gliogenesis and this chapter brings together everything we know today on this critical topic. It also includes the latest views of Bignami on the role of extracellular matrix in gliogenesis and glial functions. "Evolution of Astrocytes in the Vertebrate CNS" by Suarez et al. complements and extends the information in Bignami's chapter by including ependymal astrocytes.

Описание: Accumulation of glia, gliosis, in various neurological disorders is not a static scar, but actively involved in pathogenesis of various neurological and psychiatric disorders, where glial cells produce both inflammatory and neurotrophic factors. These factors may play a role in neuronal damage, but also have a protective and reparative function by inducing neuroinflammation. However, definition as well as the mechanisms of neuroinflammation is not yet clear. We first define acute, chronic and non-classical neuroinflammation. Glial cells are activated by a variety of stimuli via receptors on glial cells. Toll like receptors (TLR) are one of these receptors. In response to harmful stimuli, neurons produce factors as either eat-me or help-me signals. These factors include cytokines, chemokines and damage-associated molecular pattern (DAMP). Some of them activate glial cells via TLR, and function to protect neurons or further induce neuroinflammation. Thus, the interaction between neuron-glia and glia-glia is a main feature of neuroinflammation. Glial cells communicate with other glial or neural cells via gap-junctions. The communication may also be important for the understanding of neuroinflammation. Oligodendrocytes-neurons communication may be critical in either myelination or demyelination. Damage of blood-brain barrier (BBB) is common feature of both inflammatory and degenerative neurological disorders. Thus, relation of BBB damage and functions of glial cell may also be important in the development of neuroinflammation. In this book, we focused on neuron-glia interaction of various aspects for understanding of pathophysiology of neuroinflammation in development of inflammatory as well as degenerative neurological disorders.

Описание: This book describes a large number of open problems in the theory of stochastic neural systems, with the aim of enticing probabilists to work on them. This includes problems arising from stochastic models of individual neurons as well as those arising from stochastic models of the activities of small and large networks of interconnected neurons.

Описание: This book presents an engaging account of a provocative new theory which explores how our brain generates conscious experience and where this occurs. It suggests that conscious experience happens not at the whole brain level but at the level of individual nerve cells. The notion that the brain as a whole is sentient is an illusion created by the exquisite organization of the individually conscious neurons. Despite appearances to the contrary, conscious behavior that seems to be the product of a single macroscopic mind is actually the integrated output of a chorus of microscopic minds, each associated with an individual neuron. The result is a theory that revolutionizes our conception of who and what we are.
