Описание: What does federalism do to welfare states? This book argues for an approach methodologically focused on configurations of variables within cases rather than a fruitless attempt to isolate the effect of federalism; and one that is engaged with identifying key elements in configurations as well as with when and how their interactions matter.

Описание: Describes, explains, and explores the Index Theorem of Atiyah and Singer, one of the truly great accomplishments of twentieth-century mathematics whose influence continues to grow, fifty years after its discovery. David Bleecker and Bernhelm Booss-Bavnbek give two proofs of the Atiyah-Singer Index Theorem in impressive detail: one based on K-theory and the other on the heat kernel approach.

Because of You Old Glory Flies is a collection of heartfelt poems and illustrations to say thank you to all who have served, or currently serve in the United States military. In creating this book, Julie Dueker and Ray "Bubba" Sorensen II, a.k.a. The Freedom Rock Painter, have combined their unique talents and passions for God and country to show America's heroes we are forever in their debt. They pray this book touches the hearts and lives of those who open it and share it.
"I'm impressed with Julie's work to capture the essence of hero. There are heroes all around us and some we would never know served in our nation's military to defend the rights and privileges that we hold dear. We can never repay them enough for all that they and their families have given to the rest of us. Many are in cemeteries across our land and overseas. Some didn't return at all. Others live quietly in our communities continuing to give of themselves for the good of others. America's greatness lies on the backs of our veterans and those who serve today. They have fought and died for us. I believe Julie's works depict that very well."

Описание: I have taught and coached young adults now for over 17 years in the public-school system. During my career, Ive come to realize that kids today are growing up in uncertain and confusing times, and I for one wouldnt want to trade places with them. In todays world, there is a great need of positive influences and role-models in the lives of children, especially in the lives of young adults who are searching for answers to lifes biggest questions. In search of those answers, far too many kids today are looking in the wrong places. They are looking to numerous social media outlets, to celebrities, to athletes, and to pop culture. Often kids today arent even asking themselves the right questions, the questions that lead to truth, real love, real meaning, and peace and fulfillment in life. In our ever-increasing secular world, many young adults are not looking to God and Faith for lifes meaning and purpose. Many do not grow up in any kind of religious household and sadly are never really exposed to the truth, love, and meaning that only a relationship with God so generously provides. Polls among teens today show that they are increasingly unhappy, and this is occurring today while kids are growing up with more wealth and amenities than generations before. Most children today are educated in public schools where any mention of God, specifically Christ, is outlawed. For the students that do attend weekly religious education classes during the school year, the vast majority are hardly interested, and see it only as something they must put up with until they are freed from their parents reigns. Although that is true, in essence, young adults today are not any different from young adults during any other time. They still want to love and be loved. They still want to find their place in the world. They still look to their surroundings for affirmation and for meaning in life. Too often, they end up uncertain about their future and purpose while a relationship with God is frequently absent. I wrote this book in an attempt to share my story of going through cancer and re-evaluating my life and relationship with God. Through this process, I decided to become a teacher in part to share my faith and on pass on lessons of gratitude and wisdom. I hope that the book can help young adults and anyone of any age to find in their lives a greater meaning and purpose, which of course cannot be thoroughly found without God. Going through cancer at a young age has made me realize how fragile life can be. Ive realized how dependent upon God we are for everything, whether we realize it or not. As a cancer survivor Ive realized the importance of gratitude. I learned to love and cherish my Catholic faith and my experience surviving illness has strengthened my faith and trust in the mercy and love of God. After going through cancer, I began to realize more fully Gods presence in my life and began to live my life in a more deliberate way. In doing so, I have gained gratitude and wisdom that I feel would help todays generation. In more fully embracing my Catholic faith, a love for our Blessed Mother has granted me a peace like no other especially in my visit to Lourdes and Fatima, but also in my encounter with Saint Bernadette. Ive always felt that in reading a book, if I could take one insight from reading it, that it would be well worth my time. In that respect, I hope that readers will find a few lessons of gratitude, wisdom, or even a story that may stay with them long after they have put the book down.
Описание: Lessons in Gratitude tells the story of Aaron Dworkin, a MacArthur Fellow, social entrepreneur, and spoken word artist who has dedicated his life’s work to changing the face of classical arts in the world. The themes of persistence, passion, and loyalty shine through stories of an unhappy childhood, a lifelong search for identity, and the obstacles of race, culture, and class. Readers will learn how the author greets these challenges and how they drove him to make a difference for people who are shut out of opportunity. Persistence in the face of multiple failures and false starts ultimately led Dworkin to create the Sphinx Organization, whose mission is to address the underrepresentation of Black and Latinx people in the field of the classical arts.
Aaron’s unique journey, which begins with his adoption by a white Jewish couple from Chicago at two weeks of age, leads him to the ultimate reunification with his birth family at the age of 31. Lessons of Gratitude is a coming of age story that examines the difficulties of biracial identity across generations and the challenges that mixed race families still face today. It is also a painful and honest adoption memoir, further complicating the narrator’s experiences of racial identity throughout his life and shaping his experiences with his own children. Through his work in the arts and the impact of this work, Dworkin has been able to “pay forward” the first thing that offered him unconditional love—music.

Описание:
A celebration of men's voices in prayer--through the ages from many faiths, cultures and traditions.
"If men like us don't pray, where will emerging generations get a window into the soul of a good man, an image of the kind of man they can aspire to be--or be with--when they grow up? If men don't pray, who will model for them the practices of soul care--of gratitude, confession, compassion, humility, petition, repentance, grief, faith, hope and love? If men don't pray, what will men become, and what will become of our world and our future?" --from the Introduction by Brian D. McLaren
This collection celebrates the profound variety of ways men around the world have called out to the Divine--with words of joy, praise, gratitude, wonder, petition and even anger--from the ancient world up to our own day.
The prayers come from a broad spectrum of spiritual traditions--both East and West--including Christianity, Judaism, Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism and more. Together they provide an eloquent expression of men's inner lives, and of the practical, mysterious, painful and joyous endeavor that prayer is. Men Pray will challenge your preconceived ideas about prayer. It will inspire you to explore new ways of prayerful expression and new possibilities for your own spiritual journey. This is a book to treasure and to share.

In the 1840s, Philadelphia was poised to join the ranks of the world's great cities, as its population grew, its manufacturing prospered, and its railroads reached outward to the West. Yet epidemics of riot, disease, and labor conflict led some to wonder whether growth would lead to disintegration. As slavery and territorial conquest forced Americans to ponder a similar looming disunion at the national level, Philadelphians searched for ways to hold their city together across internal social and sectional divisions—a project of consolidation that reshaped their city into the boundaries we know today. A bold new interpretation of a crucial period in Philadelphia's history, In Union There Is Strength examines the social and spatial reconstruction of an American city in the decades on either side of the American Civil War. Andrew Heath follows Philadelphia's fortunes over the course of forty years as industrialization, immigration, and natural population growth turned a Jacksonian-era port with a population of two hundred thousand into a Gilded Age metropolis containing nearly a million people. Heath focuses on the utopian socialists, civic boosters, and municipal reformers who argued that the path to urban greatness lay in the harmonious consolidation of jarring interests rather than in the atomistic individualism we have often associated with the nineteenth-century metropolis. Their rival visions drew them into debates about the reach of local government, the design of urban space, the character of civic life, the power of corporations, and the relations between labor and capital—and ultimately became entangled with the question of national union itself. In tracing these links between city-making and nation-making in the mid-nineteenth century, In Union There Is Strength shows how its titular rallying cry inspired creative, contradictory, and fiercely contested ideas about how to design, build, and live in a metropolis.
Angie Hager's path in life was not unfurling as she anticipated. Her womb was devoid of the babies she so desperately wanted to bring into the world. As she suffered in silence, she slowly began to realize that God had a plan for her life. But before his plan could take place, she first needed to learn lessons about herself, her marriage, and most importantly, how to rely on God through all circumstances.
In a collection of heartfelt devotions, Hager shares personal stories, scripture, and reflective questions that demonstrate exactly how God is in control of every circumstance in our lives-including infertility. Her devotionals address the emotions that surround infertility such as jealousy, guilt, grief, and shame; the strain that infertility places on a marriage; our instinct to focus on what we don't have instead of what we do; and our ability to find gratitude for all our blessings, even when they are not what we imagined them to be. Through it all, Hager reminds women that through prayer and faith, it is possible to strengthen their walk with Christ, even during such challenging times.
Tamar's Desire shares fifty-plus Christian devotions that offer hope, encouragement, and healing to those suffering from infertility.
