Описание: Most previous investigations of family expenditures have dealt either with families of wage earners or with all families without differentiation. This Heller Committee study centers on white-collar families in which the chief breadwinners were employed in salaried occupations with earnings between $4800 and $7500--a group about whose spending habits little has previously been known. The author analyzes the expenditures of 159 San Francisco Bay Area families. The reader will find not only the sums spent for each general category of expenditure but also the kinds of goods purchased; for example, information is included on ownership and rental of homes, purchase of new and second-hand automobiles, and types of household equipment purchased. Similar details will be found for each category of expenditure, and for the use of installment purchasing. In addition, non-consumption expenditures, mainly provisions for insurance and retirement, are set forth in considerable detail. The study also includes a comparison of the economic behavior of these middle-income families with that revealed in a 1950 Bureau of Labor Statistics Bay Area survey of families with lower incomes. This title is part of UC Press's Voices Revived program, which commemorates University of California Press's mission to seek out and cultivate the brightest minds and give them voice, reach, and impact. Drawing on a backlist dating to 1893, Voices Revived makes high-quality, peer-reviewed scholarship accessible once again using print-on-demand technology. This title was originally published in 1957.
Описание: Enhancing the productivity of agriculture is vital for Sub-Saharan Africa's economic future and is one of the most important tools to end extreme poverty and boost shared prosperity in the region. How governments elect to spend public resources has significant development impact in this regard. Choosing to catalyze a shift toward more effective, efficient, and climate-resilient public spending in agriculture can accelerate change and unleash growth. Not only does agricultural public spending in Sub-Saharan Africa lag behind other developing regions but its impact is vitiated by subsidy programs and transfers that tend to benefit elites to the detriment of poor people and the agricultural sector itself. Shortcomings in the budgeting processes also reduce spending effectiveness. In light of this scenario, addressing the quality of public spending and the efficiency of resource use becomes even more important than addressing only the level of spending. Improvements in the policy environment, better institutions, and investments in rural public goods positively affect agricultural productivity. These, combined with smarter use of public funds, have helped lay the foundations for agricultural productivity growth around the world, resulting in a wealth of important lessons from which African policy makers and development practitioners can draw. 'Reaping Richer Returns: Public Spending Priorities for African Agriculture Productivity Growth' will be of particular interest to policy makers, development practitioners, and academics. The rigorous analysis presented in this book provides options for reform with a view to boosting the productivity of African agriculture and eventually increasing development impact.

Описание: Nearly 85 years ago, Wesley Clair Mitchell, the acknowledged leader of American economists during the first half of this century, wrote: "Important as the art of spending is, we have developed less skill in its practice than in the practice of making money. Common sense forbids our wasting dollars earned by irksome efforts; and yet we are notoriously extravagant. Ignorance of qualities, uncertainty of taste, lack of accounting, carelessness about prices. Many of us scarcely know what becomes of our money."More than ever, in our world of ever-increasing credit card debt, lenient bankruptcy laws, and runaway consumption, these words still ring true. This collection of Mitchell's essays, makes it easier for today's and tomorrow's economists and social scientists to become acquainted with Mitchell's many contributions to the study of the American economy.Regrettably, the passage of time can blur and even obliterate the reputation and achievements of yesterday's leaders of ideas and actions. Although the National Bureau of Economic Research, which Mitchell helped to found and which he led in the 1920s and 1930s, remains a leading research institution, relatively few of its associates, who represent the elite among U.S. academic economists, have any first-hand acquaintance with Mitchell's work. Eli Ginzberg rounds out this edition with Mitchell's comprehensive analysis of "Business Cycles," first published in 1929, an area that commanded most of his scholarly efforts. Ginzberg's essay on Mitchell, written in 1931 and published for the first time in 1997, serves as an appropriate introduction to this new edition. His afterword contains remarks delivered at the 50th anniversary of Mitchell's death at the meeting of the Allied Social Sciences Association held in Chicago early in 1998, a telling tribute to this undisputed giant in the field.Wesley Clair Mitchell (18741948) held major teaching posts at the University of California and Columbia University. One of the most eminent U.S. economists, Mitchell focused much of his research on the statistical investigation of business cycles. His two major works are Business Cycles (1913) and Business Cycles: The Problem at its Setting, (1927).Eli Ginzberg is A. Barton Hepburn Professor Emeritus at the Graduate School of Business, and Director of the Eisenhower Center for the Conservation of Human Resources at Columbia University.

A breakneck dissection of truth, lies, and all the troubles in between. - Stephanie Hayes, author of Obitchuary
After you're gone, what will they say about you?
Alton Carver is about to find out. Alton is under federal investigation for embezzling and securities fraud. Instead of spending years behind bars, he's got a plan: stage his own death, take the money he stole and light out for Central America, leaving behind his wife and daughter. But when he sticks around town long enough to watch his own funeral, he makes the unpleasant discovery that the life he's leaving behind isn't the life he thought he had. When he overhears the way his former colleagues talk about him now that he's "gone," Alton is forced to reconsider his self-image as a respected pillar of the legal community. The shock of seeing his wife in the arms of another man leads Alton to postpone his plan to run for the border. What comes next is a slow-burn train wreck, a tale of self-deception, revenge and bad decisions.

Описание:
"Spiritual kin to Gertude Stein, Tom Smith exalts in inspired wordplay, running the gamut from sublime nonsense to the most surprising sorts of common sense, so deftly that it's sometimes hard to tell which is which. He is a virtuoso of the ruggedly original." --Harry Smith publishing, poet, essayist (Pulpsmith, The Sexy Sixties)
"In Spending the Light we are given...the distilled wisdom and wit and experience of a lifetime, with more than half a century of it devoted to creating memorable and original poetry. There is an extraordinary diversity of form and tone and a rich variety of dramatic voices, not least of which is the clear, strong voice of Tom Smith himself." --George Garrett poet, novelist, author of Whistling in the Dark
"These poems sing of the domestic and the familiar and in their quiet power make the humdrum numinous. The poet's facility with simile and metaphor allows quiet observation and wry reaction to soar in significance. His classical allusions escape pedantry and his insights, religious and secular, as well as his uncluttered observation of children, are an important facet of his poetic strength." --David Watmough author of Thy Mother's Glass, Hunting With Diana, et al.
"Tom Smith is a poet in Paul Goodman mode--a family man with well-honed peripheral vision. From Spending the Light we discover that changing a life need not mean hiding a life." --Rudy Kikel author of Period Pieces and poetry editor of Bay Windows and The South End News
