Описание:
This volume offers an overview of the state of the field, and shows the importance of Islamic inscriptions for disciplines such as art history, history and literature. The chapters range from surveys to detailed exploration of individual topics, providing an insight to some of the most recent cutting-edge work on Islamic inscriptions. It focuses on the period from the rise of Islam to the fifteenth century, ranging across the Islamic world from the Maghreb to India and Central Asia, and inscriptions in Arabic, Persian and Turkish.
The five sections of the book draw together some of the principal themes: ‘Royal Power’ investigates the role of sultanic patronage in epigraphy, and the use of inscriptions for projecting royal power. ‘Piety’ examines the relationship between epigraphy and religious practice. ‘Epigraphic Style and Function’ explores the relationship between the use of specific epigraphic styles and scripts and the function of a monument. ‘Inscribed Objects’ moves from monumental inscriptions to those on objects such as ceramics and pen-cases. The final section considers the interplay between inscriptions and historical sources as well as the utility of inscriptions as historical sources.

Описание: The Old Turkic Yenisei Inscriptions have been significantly less thoroughly investigated than the famous Orkhon Inscriptions, and many paleographical, grammatical, and lexical aspects are still insufficiently examined. This book is the first monograph study of eight inscriptions found near the Uybat River in Khakassia, seven of which are engraved in stone, one in the bottom of a silver vessel. Although all but one of the inscriptions have been the object of research, many problems regarding the glyphs and their reading are unsolved. The present study collects and compares all relevant information available on the Uybat Inscriptions and provides a thorough, revised analysis of the texts. Every inscription is presented in transliteration, transcription and translation, with detailed metadata, exhaustive information on the glyph inventory, and a comprehensive critical apparatus. The book also contains a glossary of all identifiable lexemes and a morphology index. Drawings, photographs and facsimiles are given in the appendix. The study contributes to our understanding of the language, script, and culture of the Old Turkic civilization in the Yenisei area and can serve as a model for further studies on individual inscription groups.

Описание: Isabelle Dolezalek is the recipient of the 2018 ICMA Annual Book Prize. Roger II’s famous mantle and other royal garments from twelfth- and thirteenth-century Sicily prominently display Arabic inscriptions. While the phenomenon is highly unusual in the context of Latin Christian kingship, the use of inscriptions as a textile ornament was common and imbued with political functions in the Islamic courts of the medieval Mediterranean. This case study of the inscribed garments from Norman Sicily draws attention to the diverse functions of Arabic textile inscriptions using various contextual frames. Such a contextual approach not only highlights the specificities of the Norman textile inscriptions and emphasises the practical and political choices underlying their use at the Sicilian court, it also pinpoints the flaws of universalising approaches to transcultural ornamental in circulation in the medieval Mediterranean. This new perspective on the royal garments from Norman Sicily draws from a variety of disciplines, including Islamic and European art history, the history of textiles, epigraphy, legal history and historiography, and aims to challenge established notions of cultural and disciplinary boundaries.

Описание: This book investigates the nature of regional variation in the early Chinese writing system through bamboo manuscripts and inscriptions dating from the late pre-imperial China (5th-3rd centuries BCE). Diachronic and synchronic comparisons of graphic details show that none of the well-recognized regional varieties developed independently from one another. Furthermore, differences in graphic components can be accounted for as alternations of graphs that are compatible in their semantic or phonetic values. The phonological systems underlying various regional orthographies unanimously point to a single coherent sound system with some mixture of dialect pronunciations. This strongly suggests that all the late pre-imperial regional scripts derived from a kind of orthographic meta-system based on one spoken standard language. This orthography and its phonological systems should reasonably be dated to ca. 9th century BCE, just about the time when the earliest known Chinese lexicography "Book of Scribe Zhou" (ca. 830 BCE) was written. The conclusions of this book have further implications on reading and understanding manuscript texts in general as well as on using them as data for linguistic studies.
