Описание: This work, Wittgenstein`s last, extends the thinking of his earlier, better known writings, and in so doing, makes the most important contribution to epistemology since Kant`s Critique of Pure Reason - a claim the essays in this volume help to demonstrate.

Описание: Ludwig Wittgenstein’s brief Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus (1922) is one of the most important philosophical works of the twentieth century, yet it offers little orientation for the reader. The first-time reader is left wondering what it could be about, and the scholar is left with little guidance for interpretation. In Tractatus in Context, James C. Klagge presents the vital background necessary for appreciating Wittgenstein’s gnomic masterpiece. Tractatus in Context contains the early reactions to the Tractatus, including the initial reviews written in 1922-1924. And while we can’t talk with Wittgenstein, we can do the next best thing—hear what he had to say about the Tractatus. Klagge thus presents what Wittgenstein thought about germane issues leading up to his writing the book, in discussions and correspondence with others about his ideas, and what he had to say about the Tractatus after it was written—in letters, lectures and conversations. It offers, you might say, Wittgenstein’s own commentary on the book.Key Features:Illuminates what is at stake in the Tractatus, by providing the views of others that engaged Wittgenstein as he was writing it.Includes Wittgenstein’s earlier thoughts on ideas in the book as recorded in his notebooks, letters, and conversations as well as his later, retrospective comments on those ideas.Draws on new or little-known sources, such as Wittgenstein’s coded notebooks, Hermine’s notes, Frege’s letters, H?nsel’s diary, Ramsey’s notes, and Skinner’s dictations.Draws connections between the background context and specific passages in the Tractatus, using a proposition-by-proposition commentary.

Описание: Michael Potter shows, for the first time, that Wittgenstein`s early Notes on Logic are a work of philosophical and historical importance. Using a challenging blend of biography and philosophy, he draws new conclusions about the nature of the Notes, the genesis of the Tractatus, and Wittgenstein`s working methods.

Описание: Paul Horwich presents a bold new interpretation of Wittgenstein`s later work. He argues that it is Wittgenstein`s radically anti-theoretical metaphilosophy - and not his identification of the meaning of a word with its use - that underpins his discussions of specific issues concerning language, the mind, mathematics, knowledge, art, and religion.

Описание: The book explains why and how Wittgenstein adapted the Tractatus in phenomenological and grammatical terms to meet challenges of his `middle period.` It also shows why and how he invents a new method and develops an anthropological perspective, which gradually frame his philosophy and give birth to the Philosophical Investigations.

Описание:
Philosophers since Descartes have felt themselves compelled to make a choice between mind and body. Wittgenstein's Philosophy of Mind, first published in 1986, argues that there is no genuine epistemological problem of mind, and that the widespread philosophical scepticism with regard to our knowledge of other minds is without foundation. Ashok Vohra applies Wittgenstein's method to show that the problem has arisen through a tendency to over-philosophise our simple experiences.
Vohra presents a positive account of Wittgenstein's philosophy of mind, arguing that to consider his philosophy entirely destructive is misleading. He shows that knowledge of mind is gained through a large complex of intersubjectively identifiable factors such as the linguistic and non-linguistic past, present and future behaviour of the person concerned. He thus justifies the belief, on which psychology and psychoanalysis are based, that mind is not a mystery to which only the owner has privileged access.
