Описание: Metabolism includes various pathways of chemical reactions; understanding these pathways leads to an improved knowledge of the causes, preventions, and cures for human diseases. Medical Biochemistry: Human Metabolism in Health and Disease provides a concise yet thorough explanation of human metabolism and its role in health and diseases.
Описание: Metabolic disorder caused by altered levels of metabolism resulting pathophysiological abnormalities often leads to childhood death. Several new developments on metabolic diseases research have been emerging. Gaucher disease is a lysosomal storage disorder caused by glucocerebrosidase gene mutations resulting glucocerebrosidase deficiency. Current studies show that the same gene mutations also contribute to the Parkinsons disease. Tetrahydrobiopterin (BH4) has been widely used in treating patients with Phenylketonuria over a decade. Recent studies reveal that patients treated with BH4 over one-year period showed reduced levels of serum B12, folate and iron intake and therefore patients under chronic BH4 treatment needed to be advised to have additional micronutrients along with BH4. Macrocephaly was used as one of the important features to diagnose Canavan disease. However, a recent study showing a child with aspartoacylase gene mutation developed microcephaly. Hence, Canavan disease phenotype can be either macrocephaly or microcephaly. These are a few examples of recent developments on metabolic diseases research. Therefore, this book was aimed to compose current developments on metabolic diseases research for the use by broad spectrum of experts including Physicians, Neuroscientists, Neurologists, Biomedical researchers, Biochemists, Molecular biologists, Basic Science Researchers and Medical Students.

Описание: This book discusses the relationship between cellular immunity and tryptophan metabolism, as well as its products, serotonin and melatonin, in the development of several diseases and reappraises the common signal transduction pathways of the neurodegenerative diseases, carcinogenesis, immune tolerance, inflammation, hypersensitivity reactions, neuropsychiatric disorders, in addition to bacterial tryptophan biosynthesis and novel antimicrobials. Tryptophan Metabolism: Implications for Biological Processes, Health and Disease presents fundamental information on tryptophan related metabolic pathways and metabolites, implications of these products for specific biological processes, diseases and conditions. This book focuses on effects of tryptophan metabolites on human health and will appeal to researchers, clinicians and students within this field.

Описание: A critical study of diabetes in the popular imagination Over twenty-nine million people in the United States, more than nine percent of the population, have some form of diabetes. In Managing Diabetes, Jeffrey A. Bennett focuses on how the disease is imagined in public culture. Bennett argues that popular anecdotes, media representation, and communal myths are as meaningful as medical and scientific understandings of the disease. In focusing on the public character of the disease, Bennett looks at health campaigns and promotions as well as the debate over public figures like Sonia Sotomayor and her management of type 1 diabetes. Bennett examines the confusing and contradictory public depictions of diabetes to demonstrate how management of the disease is not only clinical but also cultural. Bennett also has type 1 diabetes and speaks from personal experience about the many misunderstandings and myths that are alive in the popular imagination. Ultimately, Managing Diabetes offers a fresh take on how disease is understood in contemporary society and the ways that stigma, fatalism, and health can intersect to shape diabetes's public character. This disease has dire health implications, and rates keep rising. Bennett argues that until it is better understood it cannot be better treated.

Описание: Genetic testing and counseling for cancer have made great strides in recent years. The popular demand for advanced screening, advances in testing, and the response of insurance companies and corporations have all served to shape this important area of cancer risk management. This practical, user-friendly guidebook allows you to search by disease site for the hereditary cancer syndromes relevant to your patient's cancer. This handy resource will help you formulate questions when expanding that patient's personal and family history, identify the genes that are most relevant, determine whether to refer that patient for genetic counseling and testing, and guide the patient’s long-term management based on the patient’s mutation-positive or –negative status. The guidebook will be of equal value to the practicing oncologist, surgeon, urologist, endocrinologist, gynecologist, primary care physician, physician's assistant, advanced practice nurse, and any other clinician counseling a patient who has had cancer. Look inside and discover… • Informative overview summarizes the history and current state of genetic cancer testing. • Site-specific chapters help you locate essential facts quickly. • Expert contributors share their years of experience in genetic testing and counseling. • Timely insights address key medical, ethical, legal, and financial implications of genetic cancer testing. Lifestyle Medicine: Lifestyle, the Environment and Preventive Medicine in Health and Disease, Third Edition, is an adjunct approach to health practice that seeks to deal with the more complex modern determinants of chronic diseases--primarily lifestyle and the environments driving such lifestyles--in contrast to the microbial 'causes' of infectious disease.
Our lifestyle choices have a profound effect on our health. As we live longer, one thing is clear: many of us will spend time living with injury and chronic illness due to our own choices. Changes in health patterns typically follow shifts in living conditions. Disease patterns have changed worldwide, from infectious to chronic diseases such as obesity, diabetes, and heart disease. This change has been so emphatic--nearly 70% of all presentations to a doctor in modern western societies are now chronic disease related--that medical services are being forced to change to accommodate this.
New chapters in this third edition explain the link between energy intake and expenditure; consider how modern technology are determinants of chronic disease; show how environmental influences, such as endocrine disruptors, influence our health; and summarize recent research on early childhood experiences and chronic disease.
