Описание: This collection brings together seventeen of Kipling`s early stories, written between 1885 and 1888, when Kipling was working as a journalist in India. Wry comedies of British officialdom alternate with glimpses into the harsh lives of the common soldiers and the Indian poor, revealing Kipling`s legendary powers of observation and, in `Baa Baa, Black Sheep` his own miserable childhood. From Mrs Hauksbee`s Simla drawing-room to Mulvaney`s cot in barracks, to the wild hills of Kafiristan, Kipling re-creates the India he knew in stories by turns ironic and sentimental, compassionate and bitter, displaying the brilliance that has captivated readersfor over a century.

Описание:

"The Man Who Would be King and Other Stories" is a classic collection of some of the most loved short stories of Rudyard Kipling, one of the most important and accomplished English authors of the twentieth century. The youngest winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature at age 42 in 1907, Kipling, who was born in India in 1865, captured in his writing the British Empire in all of its glory and contradiction in unparalleled detail and nuance. Contained here in this volume are some of his most enduring and fascinating short stories, such as the titular "The Man Who Would be King", a story of two young British adventurers who believe they can talk and intimidate their way into being kings of a small country near Afghanistan. It is a fascinating and brutal tale of greed, imperialism, arrogance, and desperation. Also included is the haunting ghost story "The Phantom 'Rickshaw", where a young man is driven mad by the ghost of the young lady he once spurned, and the dark and heartbreaking "Baa Baa, Black Sheep", a story of an unwanted young ward who is driven to desperate acts by his cruel and heartless aunt. Together this collection includes seventeen of Kipling's best short stories. This edition is printed on premium acid-free paper.

Описание:

Brian Hungerford is an award winning author and one of the World's most experienced storytellers, in the oral tradition. In the 1950s he sold over 40 radio plays and dramatised documentaries, along with many short stories. Later he won the top award for an audio-visual program on Bangladesh. The competition involving 140 countries was organised by the UN in New York. Born in Australia in 1935, he was brought up by his grandmother, a formidable woman, who had an unsatisfiable passion for travel. In 1940, Brian and his grandmother left Sydney and began a farming life in Candelo. Candelo later became the setting and mainspring of many stories. In 1959, with a record of more than 25 radio plays and a handful of published short stories, he left his grandmother, back in Sydney with an aunt, and sailed to Spain. He stayed for over a year but couldn't resist the urge to move and flew to London and work with the World Service of the BBC. Three years later, he was seconded to FAO (The Food and Agriculture Organisation of the UN) and spent the next 15 years working in Rome and 13 Third-World countries. His first country was Cuba, a country and its people he will never forget. By 1985 he was settled in Canberra living and partly living, scribbling stories, plays and, so far, three novels. He is popular on the storytelling circuit and travels up and down the east coast of Australia with a repertoire of 300 odd stories. In suburban Canberra, his neighbours also know him as a player of assorted bagpipes.
