Описание:
Based on the NPT three-part mini series, Do No Harm: The Opioid Epidemic follows author and director, Harry Wiland as he works to unearth the history and truth behind America's rampant opioid crisis, and investigates how this crisis ballooned into an epidemic fueled by Big Pharma's ploys, the medical community's obliviousness, and policymakers lack of oversight.
The Opioid Epidemic is the worst man-made drug epidemic in the history of our nation. More people die each year from an opioid drug overdose than in automobile accidents. The statistics are staggering. Do No Harm spotlights experts, journalists, and public health crusaders who are combating the special interests of Big Pharma and informing the world on how an aggressive pharmaceutical mass marketing campaign for the new drug OxyContin misled doctors and the public into our current crisis of death and addiction.
Wiland highlights the stories of those hit hardest by prescription opioid addiction and overdose death, and sheds light on how whole communities have been ravaged by the spread of addiction. Despite regional health experts, local government, law enforcement, journalists, and the DEA's efforts to combat the epidemic, people continue to die at an alarming rate from prescription drug overdoses.
The chapters of this book chronicle this opioid epidemic in all its complexity from many perspectives including the plight of the millions of Americans who suffer from opioid addiction. People, young and old on the rocky road to recovery, tell their harrowing stories, current victories, and on-going struggles with the disease.

Описание:
SAVAGE, A Journey through the Opioid Epidemic is a wild, wild ride of how one gifted young person, from a good home, got caught up in the drinking and drugging of our time, only to lose friends, to come near death himself, lose his education and shot at careers, a girl he loved, his family's hopes and respect, and then to lose faith that he could ever recover. At times funny, this book is a harrowing ordeal of how drugs and their allure will not let you go until it causes major havoc.
Sacchi finally gets straight "sick and tired," as the expression goes, of the pain of not being who he really is, he stays straight. Full of compassion for those who stand by him, for friends who die from it, SAVAGE tells us more of what this addiction does than any statistic. Read it and weep and learn and bless all those who make it. Also enjoy Saachi's wit and eagle eye for all the antics he had to go through just to survive.

Описание: The Opioid Epidemic is one of the major events that has occurred in the United States during the past few years. Several factors have contributed to this epidemic. Accrediting bodies identifying pain as the 5th Vital Sign certainly addressed patients pain but also accelerated the use of prescription narcotic pain medications as first line therapy rather than utilizing other types of pharmacologic agents that are not narcotics as well as trying other non-pharmacologic interventions such as holistic health modalities. Dependent upon the type of narcotic pain medication prescribed, patients can develop a dependence upon the medication which then leads to addiction. Purchasing such medications can be rather expensive. Many patients then turn to purchasing less expensive drugs, such as Heroin, off of the street. Compounding the problem today is that much of the heroin is tainted with other drugs, such as Benzodiazepines and Fentanyl. Fentanyl is far more potent than heroin. The end result is that many young people as well as older people are dying from overdoses. If someone is not available to administer Naloxone immediately the end result is death. There have been many strategies implemented by both the federal government and individual states governments to combat the opioid epidemic. Many states have implemented Prescription Drug Monitoring Programs (PDMP) that report the prescriptions for controlled substances that a patient purchases. Legislation has been passed to promote addiction treatment centers and medicated assisted treatment programs. Although there has been a noted decreased in opioid related deaths, there is still a long way to go to combat this epidemic. Care rendered to the patient with opioid substance use disorders needs to be interprofessional and inclusive of Medicine, Nursing, Counseling and other behavioral modalities. Such interprofessional care will yield the best treatment outcomes.
