Описание: In recent years, online social networking has revolutionized interpersonal communication. The newer research on language analysis in social media has been increasingly focusing on the latter's impact on our daily lives, both on a personal and a professional level. Natural language processing (NLP) is one of the most promising avenues for social media data processing. It is a scientific challenge to develop powerful methods and algorithms that extract relevant information from a large volume of data coming from multiple sources and languages in various formats or in free form. This book will discuss the challenges in analyzing social media texts in contrast with traditional documents.
Research methods in information extraction, automatic categorization and clustering, automatic summarization and indexing, and statistical machine translation need to be adapted to a new kind of data. This book reviews the current research on NLP tools and methods for processing the non-traditional information from social media data that is available in large amounts, and it shows how innovative NLP approaches can integrate appropriate linguistic information in various fields such as social media monitoring, health care, and business intelligence. The book further covers the existing evaluation metrics for NLP and social media applications and the new efforts in evaluation campaigns or shared tasks on new datasets collected from social media. Such tasks are organized by the Association for Computational Linguistics (such as SemEval tasks), the National Institute of Standards and Technology via the Text REtrieval Conference (TREC) and the Text Analysis Conference (TAC), or the Conference and Labs of the Evaluation Forum (CLEF).
In this third edition of the book, the authors added information about recent progress in NLP for social media applications, including more about the modern techniques provided by deep neural networks (DNNs) for modeling language and analyzing social media data.

Описание: This edited volume presents advances in modeling and computational analysis techniques related to networks and online communities. It contains the best papers of notable scientists from the 4th European Network Intelligence Conference (ENIC 2017) that have been peer reviewed and expanded into the present format. The aim of this text is to share knowledge and experience as well as to present recent advances in the field. The book is a nice mix of basic research topics such as data-based centrality measures along with intriguing applied topics, for example, interaction decay patterns in online social communities. This book will appeal to students, professors, and researchers working in the fields of data science, computational social science, and social network analysis.

Описание: Social media’s connectivity is often thought to be a manifestation of human nature buried until now, revealed only through the diverse technologies of the participatory internet. Rather than embrace this view, Inhuman Networks: Social Media and the Archaeology of Connection argues that the human nature revealed by social media imagines network technology and data as models for behavior online. Covering a wide range of historical and interdisciplinary subjects, Grant Bollmer examines the emergence of “the network” as a model for relation in the 1700s and 1800s and follows it through marginal, often forgotten articulations of technology, biology, economics, and the social. From this history, Bollmer examines contemporary controversies surrounding social media, extending out to the influence of network models on issues of critical theory, politics, popular science, and neoliberalism. By moving through the past and present of network media, Inhuman Networks demonstrates how contemporary network culture unintentionally repeats debates over the limits of Western modernity to provide an idealized future where “the human” is interchangeable with abstract, flowing data connected through well-managed, distributed networks.

Описание: This is a textbook for a senior-level undergraduate course for math, physics and chemistry majors. This one course can play two different but complimentary roles: it can serve as a capstone course for students finishing their education, and it can serve as motivating story for future study of mathematics. Some textbooks are like a vigorous regular physical training program, preparing people for a wide range of challenges by honing their basic skills thoroughly. Some are like a series of day hikes. This book is more like an intended trek to a particularly beautiful goal. We'll take the easiest route to the top, and we'll stop to appreciate local flora as well as distant peaks worthy of the vigorous training one would need to scale them. Advice to the Student: This book was written with many different readers in mind. Some will be mathematics students interested to see a beautiful and powerful application of a "pure" mathematical subject. Some will be students of physics and chemistry curious about the mathematics behind some tools they use, such as spherical harmonics. Because the readership is so varied, no single reader should be put off by occasional digressions aimed at certain other readers.
