Описание: The importance of spiritual well-being and the role of meaning in moderating depression, hopelessness and desire for death in terminally-ill cancer and AIDS patients has been well-supported by research, and has led many palliative clinicians to look beyond the role of antidepressant treatment in this population. Clinicians are focusing on the development of non-pharmacologic interventions that can address issues such as hopelessness, loss of meaning, and spiritual well-being in patients with advanced cancer at the end of life. This effort led to an exploration and analysis of the work of Viktor Frankl and his concepts of logotherapy, or meaning-based psychotherapy. While Frankl's logotherapy was not designed for the treatment of patients with life-threatening illnesses, his concepts of meaning and spirituality have inspired applications in psychotherapeutic work with advanced cancer patients, many of whom seek guidance and help in dealing with issues of sustaining meaning, hope, and understanding cancer and impending death in the context of their lives. Individual Meaning-Centered Group Psychotherapy (IMCP), an intervention developed and rigorously tested by the Department of Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, is a seven-week program that utilizes a mixture of didactics, discussion and experiential exercises that focus around particular themes related to meaning and advanced cancer. Patients are assigned readings and homework that are specific to each session's theme and which are utilized in each session. While the focus of each session is on issues of meaning and purpose in life in the face of advanced cancer and a limited prognosis, elements of support and expression of emotion are inevitable in the context of each group session. The structured intervention presented in this manual can be provided by a wide array of clinical disciplines, ranging from chaplains, nurses, palliative care physicians, to counselors, psychotherapists, social workers, graduate psychology students, psychologists and psychiatrists.

As both Carl Jung and Wilfred Bion observed, the patient may be asking something of the therapist that is intrinsically spiritual as well as psychotherapeutic.

Описание:
What are the ways in which we can understand the meaning of the psychology of meaning in people's lives? In the last century mainstream psychology has largely neglected the topic of meaning. More recently, the concept has become an academically legitimate one within positive psychology and in some other speciality areas of psychology. This book contains a collection of theoretical, methodological and empirical papers written by the acknowledged experts systematically working on the problems of personal meaning within the positive psychology framework. The authors investigate the possibilities and limitations of a scientific study of personal meaning and new perspectives that this concept brings to the field.
This book was originally published as a special issue of The Journal of Positive Psychology.

Getting the news that your child has cancer is never anticipated. In a sudden twist of reality, the world is upside down and you are shaken at the deepest level. Only a select few truly understand this horrifying alternate universe you've entered, and you are left confused and alone. But instead of being allowed to fall to pieces, you do what you must (what moms always do): you "mom-up" and take care of your child. The pages of this little book detail the raw emotions and experiences of a mother who has been through the often-agonizing roller coaster of her daughter's treatment. Spoiler alert: it's not all bad. You will find practical advice and medical information scattered throughout to make this a read of the head as well as of the heart. Nobody starts this journey knowing everything, but maybe these chapters can give you a leg up. And remember, you are not alone. "Not only that, but we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope." -Romans 5:3-4 -- --AUTHOR BIO: Abigail Walker is a missionary kid, wife to a children's pastor, and pun master extraordinaire. By day, she is a typical stay-at-home mom; by night, she is a graphic designer and fantasy book connoisseur. Walker currently lives in Xenia, Ohio, with husband, Robert, daughter, Esther, and a small herd of guinea pigs.
