Описание:

In this book, Jeffrey Alexander develops a new sociological theory of social crisis, which he calls societalization. He argues that crises are triggered not by objective social strains but by the discourse and institutions of the civil sphere. In the steady state, reactions to strains unfold within institutional boundaries, handled by organizational elites according to sphere-specific logics. Institutional boundaries can be breached only if there is code switching. When strains become subject to the utopian aspirations of the civil sphere, there emerges widespread anguish about social justice and the future of democratic life. Once admired institutional elites come to be represented as perpetrators, and the civil sphere becomes intrusive legally and organizationally, demanding repairs in the name of civil purification. Resisting such repair, institutional elites foment backlash, and a war of the spheres ensues.

Alexander shows how this theory enables us to understand in a new way some of the major social crises of recent years, including the 2008 financial crisis, the Church pedophilia crisis that emerged in 2002, the phone-hacking crisis that exploded in the UK in 2011, and the #MeToo movement against sexual harassment in the workplace, which began with the Harvey Weinstein expose in 2017, and is still on-going today.

A major new work by one of the leading social theorists in the world today, this book will be of great interest to students and scholars in sociology, politics and the social sciences generally.

Описание: To imagine--to see what is not there--is the startling ability that has fueled human development and innovation through the centuries. As a species we stand alone in our remarkable capacity to refashion the world after the picture in our minds.

Traversing the realms of science, politics, religion, culture, philosophy, and history, Felipe Fern ndez-Armesto reveals the thrilling and disquieting tales of our imaginative leaps--from the first Homo sapiens to the present day. Through groundbreaking insights in cognitive science, Fern ndez-Armesto explores how and why we have ideas in the first place, providing a tantalizing glimpse into who we are and what we might yet accomplish. Unearthing and historical evidence, he begins by reconstructing the thoughts of our Paleolithic ancestors to reveal the subtlety and profundity of the thinking of early humans. A masterful paean to the human imagination from a wonderfully elegant thinker, Out of Our Minds shows that bad ideas are often more influential than good ones; that the oldest recoverable thoughts include some of the best; that ideas of Western origin often issued from exchanges with the wider world; and that the pace of innovative thinking is under threat.

Описание: In his latest book, esteemed philosopher John Kekes draws on anthropology, history, and literature in order to help us cope with the common predicaments that plague us as we try to take control of our lives. In each chapter he offers fascinating new ways of thinking about a particular problem that is fundamental to how we live, such as facing difficult choices, uncontrollable contingencies, complex evaluations, the failures of justice, the miasma of boredom, and the inescapable hypocrisies of social life.

Kekes considers how we might deal with these predicaments by comparing how others in different times and cultures have approached them. He examines what is good, bad, instructive, and dangerous in the sexually charged politics of the Shilluk, the Hindu caste system, Balinese role-morality, the religious passion of Cortes and Simone Weil, the fate of Colonel Hiromichi Yahara during and after the battle for Okinawa, the ritual human sacrifices of the Aztecs, and the tragedies to which innocence may lead. In doing so, he shakes us out of our deep-seated ways of thinking, enlarging our understanding of the possibilities available to us as we struggle with the problems that stand in the way of how we want to live. The result is a highly interesting journey through time and space that illuminates and helps us cope with some of the most basic predicaments we all face as human beings.

Описание: Claims about consciousness in animals are often made in support of their moral standing. Peter Carruthers argues that there is no fact of the matter about animal consciousness and it is of no scientific or ethical significance. Sympathy for an animal can be grounded in its mental states, but should not rely on assumptions about its consciousness.

Описание: If there is a thinker and writer that has addressed this psychological, social, scientific and philosophical issue in a highly scholar manner and thorough fashion, it has been Frederick R. Bauer. Professor Bauer has not only examined the issue of human nature transparently from multiple angles, but he has also considered the plethora of applications and complications his Jamesian Quintalist response implies. Frederick R. Bauer's response to the question of what a human being is can be broken down into three different stages: 1) the discovery of himself as a person, 2) his first attempts in Rome, Italy and Worcester, Massachusetts, and 3) both his published and unpublished scientific answer to the question of what is a human being. It is obvious and plain common sense that Frederick R. Bauer's first response started with himself as he started questioning and discovering who he was as a person. The rest is history, as they say. This is and should be the starting point for any serious researcher into this type of topic. As Dr. Bauer moved to frame his observations, self- iv discoveries and reflections he developed a manuscript for internal circulation during his Philosophy of Human Nature courses at Assumption College in the region of Worcester, Massachusetts. This manuscript is a gem of facts and considerations that cannot be ignored by any serious reader and researcher into this most important topic. However, it was not until 2011 that Bauer published his official statement on the issue of human nature in his You're a Human Being -What's That?: The Scientific Answer. This brief introduction of mine is precisely an introduction to his Jamesian Quintalist answer to the question of human nature found in his book. In other words, the purpose of this extremely brief exposure is for you to be redirected to read his more complete and satisfactory answer to the question of who you are Reading Bauer's work will change the notion you have about your own self-identity forever

Описание: What is a Human Being? is a brief and generic manuscript, which introduces the question about what is a human being as well as some factors connected to both the question and its answers. What is a Human Being? introduces the reader to various philosophers and psychologists who have struggled with this question throughout history. In addition, this brief manuscript addresses some of the most important theories and explanation connected to this most important question about our self-identity in an essay-oriented fashion. Moreover, its author exhibits some of the most crucial facts to consider in the asnwering of this anthropological question. Perhaps one of the most important features of this pocket-size book is that it re-directs the attention of the reader to the scientific answer to that question found in Dr. Frederick R. Bauer's book: Bauer, F. (2011). You're a Human Being -What's That?: The Scientific Answer. New York: iUniverse, Inc. It is almost guaranteed that after being re-directed to Dr. Bauer's work and reading it your notion of your self-identity will be permanently changed forever.
