This book explores the material religion of contemporary Shimla, a vibrant postcolonial city, famed for its colonial heritage, set against the backdrop of the North-Western Himalayas. Jonathan Miles-Watson demonstrates that this landscape is able to peacefully reconcile the apparent tensions of faith, heritage and identity in a way that unseats traditional theories of religion, politics and heritage. It presents a mystery that is written in space through time; the key to unlocking this mystery lies in clear view, at the city's heart, in the contemporary material religion that surrounds nominally Christian sacred sites. Although the material religion centres on landscapes that are identifiable as Christian, the book demonstrates that Hindus, atheists and Sikhs all have a role to play in the mutually constitutive relations that lie at the centre of these knots of sacred entanglement.

Understanding religion from a material and corporeal angle, this book addresses the ways in which refugees practice their religions and convert or develop new faiths. It also evaluates how secular institutions in Europe frame and determine what is classified as religion according to the law, and delineate the limits of religious authority, religious practice, and religious speech. The question of nationalism and migration has been shaping the political landscape in Europe for more than a decade, resulting in a nationalist upsurge. This volume places the current trajectories of people from Asia and Africa who flee from conditions such as oppression and conflict, and who are seeking refuge in Europe in a broader historical and comparative perspective. In so doing, it addresses past experiences in Europe with the role of religion in both producing and accommodating refugees, in the aftermath of the Peace of Westphalia, World War II, and in the context of the Cold War.

Judaism, Christianity and Islam are known to privilege words over images. This book shows, however, that the reality is more complex. Figurations and Sensations of the Unseenexplores the complex procedures used to render the invisible as visible and the elusive as tangible in these three traditions. Working from different disciplinary angles, contributors reflect on figuration and sensation in biblical culture, medieval Jewish culture, the imagination of the unseen in Islamic settings, Christian assaults on 'idolatry' in Africa, baroque and modern Church art, contemporary Eastern Orthodox tradition, photography on the East African coast, European opera and literature, and more.
The book shows that the three religious traditions have formed sensorial regimes: embodied habits, traditions and standards for seeing, sensing, displaying, and figuring that which could not, or should not, be seen. So, the desire for seeing the invisible and experiencing the beyond are paradoxically confirmed, contested and controlled, by the sensorial regimes in vogue. This carries over even into secularized use of religious figurations in arts and literature.

March 13, 1945. Thea had just given birth to her fourth child at a hospital under blackout. Her husband defended the Vaterland in Berlin, uncertain if he would ever see his family again. Her hometown Dresden had been reduced to rubble during a two-day bombing by American and British allies. The Russians were on the move, and so was 32-year-old Thea with her four children hoping for temporary shelter. On the road, she encountered the brutal reality of war. Defeated soldiers marching amongst demoralized people on the road to Poland. A warmhearted woman took in the family in the town of Rippchen. Two brave souls, united in fighting Mongolians, that terrorized and raped its citizens. Thea reunited with her mother and sister months later in Dresden. Devastated by the hopelessness she faced, with her children starving, she connected with black marketers to sell X-ray films to hospitals in West Germany. It was a dangerous but lucrative task, prompting the Russians service suspicion of her improved lifestyle. She was sentenced to work in the uranium mines at the Erzgebirge, with her children taken to a communist operated child center. The mines were known as a brutal mining camp, its prisoners doomed for life with no way of escape. But they couldn't break Thea's will to survive She cautiously planned her getaway and manipulated her children's release from the children's home. Within days she prepared for an escape to West Germany, only taking her two oldest children on this risky journey. Making them believe they were going on a long walk that ended in crossing the Russian border from East Germany to the West. A courageous woman's escape to freedom against all odds.
