Nishida Kitarō (1870-1945) is considered Japan's first and greatest modern philosopher. As founder of the Kyoto School, he began a rigorous philosophical engagement and dialogue with Western philosophical traditions, especially the work of G. W. F. Hegel. John W. M. Krummel explores the Buddhist roots of Nishida's thought and places him in connection with Hegel and other philosophers of the Continental tradition. Krummel develops notions of self-awareness, will, being, place, the environment, religion, and politics in Nishida's thought and shows how his ethics of humility may best serve us in our complex world.

Описание: English Description: This book presents a multidisciplinary study on the history of Byblos based on the exploration and comparison of different kinds of sources. The author divides the history of Byblos into four main periods. Between the end of the second millennium and the middle of the 9th century, Byblos, which continues to maintain its privileged ties with Egypt, enjoyed a certain independence which allowed it to develop and maintain relations with the inhabitants of Huelva in Spain. However, between 853 and 610, Byblos, and because of the Assyrian conquests, not only lost its independence, but it was forced to give allegiance to the Assyrian rulers by paying tribes. This situation has not changed during the Babylonian epoch, which lasted less than a century. During the Persian era (539-333), Byblos, which was part of the province of Transeuphratene, rebuilt its fleet, and issued its own currencies. Due to lack of documents, Byblos could not reveal all its secrets yet.
Описание: Storm-333, the operation to seize Kabul and assassinate Afghan leader Hafizullah Amin, was at once a textbook success and the start of a terrible blunder. It heralded the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, an operation intended to be a short, largely symbolic show of force, yet which quickly devolved into a gritty ten-year counter-insurgency that Moscow was never able to win. Nonetheless, Storm-333 was a striking success, and despite initial concerns that it would be an impossible achievement, it saw a relative handful of Soviet special forces drawn from the KGB and the military seize the heavily defended presidential palace, neutralise the city's communications and defences, and open Kabul to occupation.
The lessons learned then are still valid today, and have been incorporated into modern Russian military practice, visible most recently in the seizure of Crimea in 2014. Written by a recognised expert on the Soviet security forces, drawing extensively on Russian sources, and fully illustrated with commissioned artwork, this is the most detailed and compelling study of this fascinating operation available in English.

Описание:
Tanizaki Jun'ichiro's In Black and White is a literary murder mystery in which the lines between fiction and reality are blurred. The writer Mizuno is working on a story about the perfect murder. His fictional victim is modeled on an acquaintance, a fellow writer. When he notices that this man's real name has crept into his manuscript, he becomes terrified that an actual murder will take place--and that he will be the main suspect. Mizuno goes to great lengths to establish an alibi, venturing into the city's underworld. But he only finds himself ever more entangled as his paranoid fantasies, including a mysterious "Shadow Man" out to entrap him, intrude into real life. A sophisticated psychological and metafictional mystery, In Black and White is a masterful, yet little-known novel from a great writer at the height of his powers.
The year 1928 was a remarkable one for Tanizaki. He wrote three exquisite novels, but while two of them--Some Prefer Nettles and Quicksand--became famous, In Black and White disappeared from view. All three were serialized in Osaka and Tokyo newspapers and magazines, but In Black and White was never published as an independent volume. This translation restores it to its rightful place among Tanizaki's works and offers a window into the author's life at a crucial point in his career. A critical afterword explains the novel's context and importance for Tanizaki and Japan's literary and cultural scene in the 1920s, connecting autobiographical elements with the novel's key concerns, including Tanizaki's critique of Japanese literary culture and fiction itself.
