A unique edition of a young Union cavalry trooper's Civil War recollections
There have been several editions of Stanton Allen's book, (previously published under the titles 'A Boy Trooper With Sheridan' and 'Down in Dixie'), recounting his experiences as a 'boy trooper' in the 1st Massachusetts Cavalry during the American Civil War. There are some differences of content, in terms of illustrations and text, between earlier editions. This is such an outstanding book, in every way, that the Leonaur editors have gathered together all the material from previously published editions and carefully combined it to create this definitive volume for modern readers to enjoy. Young Allen was just 12 years old when the Civil War between the states erupted, yet he was destined to serve on campaign and battlefield from the Battle of the Wilderness of 1864 to Lee's final surrender at Appomattox. Allen's recollections of his military experiences naturally make gripping reading, but the inclusion of a large number of first rate illustrations to illuminate his account elevate this memoir from the excellent to the truly exceptional. While Allen's book is interesting enough on its own, this edition has been enhanced by the inclusion of a concise history of the service of the 1st Massachusetts Cavalry Volunteers during the Civil War by the regiment's historian, Benjamin W. Crowninshield.
Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket.

Three wars of the mid-19th century recounted by a fighting British soldier
All those interested in the Anglo-Sikh Wars will be familiar with the services of the 31st (Huntingdonshire) Regiment of Foot, for it had served during the First Afghan War and, when the Sikhs of the Punjab opposed the British Empire in 1845, it formed part of Gough's force. The regiment notably fought at the battles of Mudki, Ferozeshah, Aliwal and Sobraon. In the Crimean War it fought at Sebastopol. The author of this book (originally published as 'Personal Adventures and Anecdotes of an Old Officer') served with the regiment and has written an essential, riveting and invaluable record of his experiences during these campaigns. Later in his career he formed a military train, which was, of necessity, converted to a cavalry regiment to serve in the Indian Mutiny of 1857 . The author also records those campaign experiences as a cavalryman with equal clarity and drama. Robertson's book is a brilliant autobiography of a British soldier at war in three of the most notable conflicts of the Victorian age and is recommended. Contains illustrations and maps not present in the original edition.
Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket.

Описание: The gripping memoirs of a cavalry officer of the First Empire This is the story of a remarkable French cavalryman of the Napoleonic era, Denis Charles Parquin, an officer of the Chasseurs a Cheval. Memoirs of soldiers of Napoleon's army are always exciting, but few exist in English translation. Those that have been translated such as the recollections of Coignet, Barres, Bourgogne and Marbot have become famous and provide a valuable resource of first hand information. Parquin joined the 20th regiment of the horse chasseurs in 1806 and served with it until 1813 rising in rank to lieutenant. He fought at Saalfeld, Jena, Eylau, Wagram, in the Iberian Peninsula at Ciudad Rodrigo and at Salamanca, gathering wounds as well as regimental promotions. In 1813, Parquin agreed to take a reduction in rank to join the elite Chasseurs a Cheval of the Imperial Guard, where he became the emperor's escort on the march and in the field. Napoleon personally awarded Parquin the cross of the Legion of Honour during a review in the same year. In the final battles of the First Empire Parquin fought at Leipzig, Hanau-where he was wounded-and during the battle for France in 1814, that led to the emperor's abdication and the restoration of the Bourbon monarchy. There is some evidence that Parquin took part in the Battle of Waterloo-probably as a cuirassier. He remained in the cavalry under the royalist regime, but was eventually ruined by his involvement in Bonapartist conspiracies. This book concentrates on his life at its most exciting as he served as a 'beau sabreur' in the service of his beloved emperor. Included here are numerous illustrations (taken from the edition of these memoirs published as 'Napoleon's Victories') that illuminate the narrative and add to the book's reading enjoyment and value as a reference source and collectors' edition. Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket.

Описание:
San Antonio native, military veteran, merchant, and mayor pro tem José Antonio Menchaca (1800–1879) was one of only a few Tejano leaders to leave behind an extensive manuscript of recollections. Portions of the document were published in 1907, followed by a “corrected” edition in 1937, but the complete work could not be published without painstaking reconstruction. At last available in its entirety, Menchaca’s book of reminiscences captures the social life, people, and events that shaped the history of Texas’s tumultuous transformation during his lifetime. Highlighting not only Menchaca’s acclaimed military service but also his vigorous defense of Tejanos’ rights, dignity, and heritage, Recollections of a Tejano Life charts a remarkable legacy while incorporating scholarly commentary to separate fact from fiction.
Revealing how Tejanos perceived themselves and the revolutionary events that defined them, this wonderfully edited volume presents Menchaca’s remembrances of such diverse figures as Antonio López de Santa Anna, Jim Bowie, Davy Crockett, Sam Houston, General Adrián Woll, Comanche chief “Casamiro,” and Texas Ranger Jack Hays. Menchaca and his fellow Tejanos were actively engaged in local struggles as Mexico won her independence from Spain; later many joined the fight to establish the Republic of Texas, only to see it annexed to the United States nine years after the Battle of San Jacinto. This first-person account corrects important misconceptions and brings previously unspoken truths vividly to life.

Описание: By the time Lieutenant-Colonel William Henry Sleeman (1788-1856) published this two-volume work in 1844, he had been living in India for more than thirty years. Volume 2 considers aspects of British governance in India, such as tax and the justice system.
The consequences of the Battle of Nashville, which took place December 15-16, 1864, are still being debated, but one thing is certain: the Union victory there marked a major turning point in the War of 1861. After losing three battles in a row, including Spring Hill (November 29) and Franklin (November 30), Confederate General John Bell Hood and his troops were forced to flee southward, leaving the all-important region of Middle Tennessee largely under Union control. Confederate power in the Western Theater had been vanquished, for as Yankees loudly and proudly proclaimed, they had "crushed the backbone of the rebellion," a victory that helped lead to Lee's surrender at Appomattox just a few months later. There are serious problems with this simplistic view, however. The Union win at Nashville was not "a remarkable display of Northern military skill," nor was the Confederate defeat "an illustration of the inferiority of Southern generals," as we have been taught. For one thing, the North had 82,000 soldiers at Nashville, the South a mere 20,000. In addition to a four-to-one numerical advantage, the North had unlimited funds, weaponry, ammunition, clothing, and food, while many of Hood's men were starving, coatless, and barefoot. As for the so-called "Rebellion," the Conservative South idolized the Union and therefore would not have "rebelled" against it. What she was actually rebelling against was the Liberal takeover of Washington, which began with the election of Left-wing Abraham Lincoln (the two parties were reversed in the 1860s), who publicly promised to overthrow the Constitution in order to implement his progressive policies. Furthermore, the Confederate Cause was not slavery, racism, or treason, as our history books falsely preach. It was, and still is, conservatism, a principle that is stronger and more alive today than ever before. Clearly "the backbone of the rebellion" was not "crushed" at Nashville So what are the facts about this famous conflict? In his book The Battle of Nashville: Recollections of Confederate and Union Soldiers, award-winning author and historian Colonel Lochlainn Seabrook allows those who were there to answer this question. After reading the 30 eyewitness accounts he provides, the reader will have a much better understanding of the conflict, of the battles that led up to Nashville (which was never meant to be fought), and even of the War itself. Illustrated with rare images and generously footnoted, Col. Seabrook also includes a thought-provoking introduction, battle statistics, 19th-Century maps, a pertinent appendix, and a comprehensive bibliography. A companion to his classic books The Battle of Spring Hill and The Battle of Franklin, The Battle of Nashville is available in paperback and hardcover. Col. Seabrook's other titles include: Abraham Lincoln Was a Liberal, Jefferson Davis Was a Conservative; Everything You Were Taught About the Civil War is Wrong, Ask a Southerner ; Lincoln's War: The Real Cause, the Real Winner, the Real Loser; Confederate Monuments: Why Every American Should Honor Confederate Soldiers and Their Memorials.
