Описание: One of the most influential disability rights activists in US history tells her personal story of fighting for the right to receive an education, have a job, and just be human.

A story of fighting to belong in a world that wasnt built for all of us and of one womans activism--from the streets of Brooklyn and San Francisco to inside the halls of Washington--Being Heumann recounts Judy Heumanns lifelong battle to achieve respect, acceptance, and inclusion in society.

Paralyzed from polio at eighteen months, Judys struggle for equality began early in life. From fighting to attend grade school after being described as a fire hazard to later winning a lawsuit against the New York City school system for denying her a teachers license because of her paralysis, Judys actions set a precedent that fundamentally improved rights for disabled people.

As a young woman, Judy rolled her wheelchair through the doors of the US Department of Health, Education, and Welfare in San Francisco as a leader of the Section 504 Sit-In, the longest takeover of a governmental building in US history. Working with a community of over 150 disabled activists and allies, Judy successfully pressured the Carter administration to implement protections for disabled peoples rights, sparking a national movement and leading to the creation of the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Candid, intimate, and irreverent, Judy Heumanns memoir about resistance to exclusion invites readers to imagine and make real a world in which we all belong.

Описание: THE TWENTY ETUDES FOR PIANO were composed during the years from 1991 to 2012. Their final configuration into Book 1 and Book 2 was determined by the music itself in the course of its composition.

Book 1 (Etudes 1-10) had a twin objective - to explore a variety of tempi, textures and piano techniques. At the same time it was meant to serve as a pedagogical tool by which I would improve my piano playing. In these two ways, Book 1 succeeded very well. I learned a great deal about the piano and in the course of learning the music, I became a better player.

New projects came along and interrupted the work on the Etudes for several years. Perhaps for that reason, when I took up work with the Etudes again I found the music was following a new path. Though I had settled questions of piano technique for myself in Book 1, the music in Book 2 quickly began to suggest a series of new adventures in harmony and structure.

In this way, Books 1 and 2, taken together, suggest a real trajectory that includes a broad range of music and technical ideas.

In the end, the Etudes are meant to be appreciated not only by the general listener, but especially by those who have the ability and patience to learn, play and perform the music themselves.

Описание: One of the most influential disability rights activists in US history tells her story of fighting to belong in school and society -a powerful role model for young adults with a passion for activism

Paralyzed from polio and raised by her Holocaust surviving parents, Judy's fight for equal access began early in life. Judy fought her high school, who initially denied her a diploma because of her inability to participate in gym; she fought her college who described her as "a fire hazard"; and she filed a lawsuit against the New York City school system, who denied her a teacher's license because of her paralysis, which she won.

These battles for equality came to fruition when as a young woman, Judy rolled her wheelchair through the doors of the U.S. Department of Health, Education and Welfare in San Francisco and organized what would be the longest takeover of a federal building in U.S. history. Demanding the implementation of Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, protecting the rights of all people with disabilities, Judy led 150 disabled people in a sit-in.

Adapted from Being Heumann, this young adult edition introduces young readers to a transformative piece of American history through the lens of Judy's life--as she evolves from a teenager simply learning to survive high school to a woman who took on the U.S. government and continues to promote rights for people with disabilities in the U.S. and across the world.

Описание: As featured in the Oscar-nominated documentary Crip Camp, and forreaders of I Am Malala, one of the most influential disability rightsactivists in US history tells her story of fighting to belong.

"If I didn't fight, who would?"

Judy Heumann was only 5 years old when she was first denied her right to attend school. Paralyzed from polio and raised by her Holocaust-surviving parents in New York City, Judy had a drive for equality that was instilled early in life.

In this young readers' edition of her acclaimed memoir, Being Heumann, Judy shares her journey of battling for equal access in an unequal world--from fighting to attend grade school after being described as a "fire hazard" because of her wheelchair, to suing the New York City school system for denying her a teacher's license because of her disability. Judy went on to lead 150 disabled people in the longest sit-in protest in US history at the San Francisco Federal Building. Cut off from the outside world, the group slept on office floors, faced down bomb threats, and risked their lives to win the world's attention and the first civil rights legislation for disabled people.

Judy's bravery, persistence, and signature rebellious streak will speak to every person fighting to belong and fighting for social justice.
