Описание:
This inspiring resource presents theories, findings, and interventions from Positive Suicidology, an emerging strengths-based approach to suicide prevention. Its synthesis of positive psychology and suicidology theories offers a science-based framework for promoting wellbeing to complement or, if appropriate, replace traditional deficit-driven theories and therapies used in reducing suicidal thoughts and behaviors. Coverage reviews interpersonal, intrapersonal, and societal risk factors for suicide, and identifies protective factors, such as hope and resilience, that can be enhanced in therapy. From there, chapters detail a palette of approaches and applications of Positive Suicidology, from the powerful motivating forces described in Self-Determination Theory to meaning-building physical and social activities.
Among the topics covered:
Future-oriented constructs and their role in suicidal ideation and enactment.
Gratitude as a protective factor for suicidal ideation and behavior: theory and evidence.
Considering race and ethnicity in the use of positive psychological approaches to suicide.
The Six R's framework as mindfulness for suicide prevention.
Community-based participatory research and empowerment for suicide prevention.
Applied resiliency and suicide prevention: a strengths-based, risk-reduction framework.
Psychotherapists, counselors, social workers, psychiatrists, and health psychologists, as well as educators, clergy and healthcare professionals, will find A Positive Psychological Approach to Suicide an invaluable source of contemporary evidence-based strategies for their prevention and intervention efforts with suicidal clients.

Описание: Community-Based Health Interventions in an Institutional Context examines challenges of 'institutionalizing' community-based health care. While the community-based or localized model is growing in popularity and importance in the United States, in practice it must often be brought in to larger institutions in order to grow to scale. The typical goals of an institution—standardization, formalization, and control—may be seen as antithetical to those of a community-based healthcare provider, such as spontaneity, customization, and flexibility. The contributions to this work raise questions about how the community-based model can be scaled up through institutions, and how 'institutionalization' can be rethought from a bottom-up approach. They provide not only an overview of community-based organizations, but also delve into practical topics such as establishing budgets, training workers, incorporating technology, as well as more theoretical topics like goal-setting, policy effects (like the ACA), and relationships between patient and community. This work will be of interest for researchers interested in exploring the community-based health care model, as well as practitioners in health care and health policy.

Описание: This unique volume demonstrates the effectiveness of applying an evidence-based practice process to the solution of selected social problems. It focuses on social work interventions addressing family, community, and societal factors. Research indicates that reinforcement for positive behavior at the group, organizational, and community levels, as opposed to interventions focusing on the individual, are more likely to result in meaningful improvement in well-being. Chapters address issues such as child maltreatment, educationally disadvantaged children, violence in schools, adolescent sexuality, substance abuse, crime, urban decline and homelessness, unemployment, marital conflict, and chronic medical problems.Empirically Based Interventions Targeting Social Problems is a relevant resource for practitioners and counseling professionals whose work involves interventions with children and families as well as communities. It also is a useful text for graduate students in social work as well as students preparing for other helping professions including psychology, sociology, marital and family counseling, and child development.

Research on the academic and social impairments related to disruptive behavior disorders, such as Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD), suggests that youth with these disorders are at unusually high risk for school failure, school dropout, significant behavior problems, social rejection, and alcohol/substance abuse and dependence when compared to their peers. Clearly, effective interventions for this population are essential. However, research also suggests that due in part to deficits in executive functioning (e.g., memory, organization, planning), youth with disruptive behavior disorders are unlikely to benefit from interventions drawing strictly from cognitive or insight-based therapies. Therefore, the literature regarding counseling and therapy for adolescents seems to divide along two general lines: 1) a rich and growing counseling literature on internalizing disorders (e.g., CBT for social anxiety) and transition planning (e.g., college and career counseling), and 2) an equivocal counseling literature on externalizing disorders, where theory, research, and practice are rarely integrated.
The proposed book bridges the gaps in the literature by integrating research and practice specific to the difficulties experienced by adolescents with disruptive behavior disorders. Much of our discussion will be based on our research of the Challenging Horizons Program and the High School Treatment Development Project conducted at James Madison University. During the course of these studies, graduate and undergraduate students have been trained to build alliances with adolescents, their teachers, and their families for the purpose of implementing evidence-based interventions. Counseling Adolescents with Disruptive Behavior Disorders describes this process in detail--drawing directly from the research and the relevant literature--with a focus on how this research can inform practice.
This therapeutic approach is best described as "solution-focused" because it uses a trans-theoretical model, similar to that advocated by Steve de Shazer, John J. Murphy, and others. Counseling Adolescents with Disruptive Behavior Disorders builds on this tradition by describing how these concepts and techniques can be applied to youth with disruptive behaviors, while providing the reader with specific intervention ideas, troubleshooting strategies, and research findings from these studies and others.
