Описание: This book explores the social participation, identification and transnational practices of Somalis living in Finland and the United States. Through a multifaceted collection of chapters which are based on data ranging from legislation and policy documents to welfare indicators and interviews, this book explores how Somali migrants experience and explore their identities and belongings, and how they strive for participation as (diaspora) citizens of their sending and receiving societies. The case studies are conducted in two countries that differ greatly in terms of their social system, migration history and integration policies and as such they provide an opportunity to explore how different social, political and legal orders influence the life-courses and wellbeing of migrant populations. Furthermore, the book highlights how the fate of the Somalis as a global diaspora is routinely intertwined with the changes in the global political climate and the state-level political processes reflecting it. This book will be of great interest to researchers, students and lecturers of migration and diaspora, as well as individuals working with (Somali) migrants.

Описание:

In Downwardly Global Lalaie Ameeriar examines the transnational labor migration of Pakistani women to Toronto. Despite being trained professionals in fields including engineering, law, medicine, and education, they experience high levels of unemployment and poverty. Rather than addressing this downward mobility as the result of bureaucratic failures, in practice their unemployment is treated as a problem of culture and racialized bodily difference. In Toronto, a city that prides itself on multicultural inclusion, women are subjected to two distinct cultural contexts revealing that integration in Canada represents not the erasure of all differences, but the celebration of some differences and the eradication of others. Downwardly Global juxtaposes the experiences of these women in state-funded unemployment workshops, where they are instructed not to smell like Indian food or wear ethnic clothing, with their experiences at cultural festivals in which they are encouraged to promote these same differences. This form of multiculturalism, Ameeriar reveals, privileges whiteness while using race, gender, and cultural difference as a scapegoat for the failures of Canadian neoliberal policies.

Описание: Global politics has transformed in recent years due to a rise in nationalist ideology, the breakdown of multiple societies, and even nation-state legitimacy. The nation-state, arguably, has been in question for much of the digital age, as citizens become transnational and claim loyalty to many different groups, causes, and in some cases, states. Thus, politics that accompany diasporic communities have become increasingly important focal points of comparative and political science research.Global Diaspora Politics and Social Movements: Emerging Research and Opportunities provides innovative insights into the dispersion of political and social groups across the world through various research methods such as case studies. This publication examines migration politics, security policy, and social movements. It is designed for academicians, policymakers, government officials, researchers, and students, and covers topics centered on the distribution of social groups and political groups.

In contrast to universalizing concepts of citizenship, the volume argues that citizenship should be theorized on many different levels & in reference to diverse public & private contexts & experiences.

Diaspora Lobbies and the Us Government: Convergence and Divergence in Making Foreign Policy

Описание:

As a nation of
immigrants, the United States has long accepted that citizens who identify with
an ancestral homeland may hold dual loyalties; yet Americans have at times
regarded the persistence of foreign ties with suspicion, seeing them as a sign of
potential disloyalty and a threat to national security. Diaspora Lobbies and the US Government brings
together a group of distinguished scholars of international politics and
international migration to examine this contradiction in the realm of American
policy making, ultimately concluding that the relationship between diaspora
groups and the government can greatly affect foreign policy. This relationship
is not unidirectional—as much as immigrants make an effort to shape foreign
policy, government legislators and administrators also seek to enlist them in
furthering American interests.

From Israel to Cuba and from Ireland to Iraq, the case
studies in this volume illustrate how potential or ongoing conflicts raise the
stakes for successful policy outcomes. Contributors provide historical and
sociological context, gauging the influence of diasporas based on population
size and length of time settled in the United States, geographic concentration,
access to resources from their own members or through other groups, and the
nature of their involvement back in their homelands. This collection brings a fresh
perspective to a rarely discussed aspect of the design of US foreign policy and
offers multiple insights into dynamics that may determine how the United States
will engage other nations in future decades.

Brubaker shows how this difference-between the territorial basis of the French citizenry and German emphasis on blood descent-was shaped by sharply differing understandings of nationhood.
