Описание: The fundamental goal of the revised edition of this acclaimed text is to provide comprehensive, practical, and straightforward information about the developing nervous system that is as relevant to those embarking on careers in pediatric neurology as it will be to the experienced practitioner who cares for infants, children, and adolescents. New to this edition are chapters on tumors of the nervous system, autism and related conditions, and practice parameters in child neurology.
Описание: Derived from Ben Pierce's popular and acclaimed Genetics: A Conceptual Approach, this streamlined text covers basic transmission, molecular, and population genetics.
Описание: The article-based thesis is becoming increasingly common, especially in the `hard` sciences such as biology, medicine and technology. Detailing examples of good versus bad practice, this concise, easy-to-read guide shows the PhD student how to prepare a thesis in this format.
Описание: An overview of how complex systems from a variety of fields can be modelled using principles of quantum mechanics; from biology and ecology, to sociology and decision-making. The mathematical basis of these models is fully described, providing a self-contained introduction for students and researchers in applied mathematics or theoretical physics.

Описание: Neuroscience is a multidisciplinary research area that evaluates the structural and organizational function of the nervous system. Advancing research and applications in this field can assist in successfully furthering advancements in various other fields.Applications of Neuroscience: Breakthroughs in Research and Practice is a comprehensive reference source for the latest scholarly material on trends, techniques, and various uses of neuroscience, and examines the benefits and challenges of these developments. Highlighting a range of pertinent topics, such as cognitive processes, neuroeconomics, and neural signal processing, this publication is ideally designed for researchers, academics, professionals, graduate-level students, and practitioners interested in emerging applications of neuroscience.
Описание: Highly Commended: Nursery World Awards 2017 Professional Book of the Year Early Childhood and Neuroscience is a practical guide to understanding the complex and challenging subject of neuroscience and its use (and misapplication) in early childhood policy and practice. The author begins by introducing the definition and history of neuroscience. The reader is then led through structured chapters discussing questions such as: Why should practitioners know about neuroscience? How can neuroscience help practitioners better provide for babies and children? and Is it relevant? Topics covered include the nature vs. nurture debate through the lens of neuroscience, epigenetics, the first 1001 days and a discussion on just how critical the first three years of life are to healthy brain development. The book provides a balanced overview of the debates by weaving discussion on the opportunities of using neuroscience in early childhood practice with examination of the limitations and ethical implications throughout the chapters. This enables students to inform their own opinions about the discipline and its use in their future practice. Clear explanations of the main terms and theories are complemented with illustrative case studies of cutting-edge research from around the world, a glossary of key terms and suggestions for further reading. Reflective discussion questions give students the chance to apply their theoretical knowledge to real-world contexts. These features encourage and support independent critical thinking, helping students to reflect on, evaluate and analyse a range of ideas, research findings and applications for their own future early childhood practice. Early Childhood and Neuroscience is essential reading for lecturers, undergraduate and postgraduate students in the field as well as for the new practitioner.

Описание: The book opens by presenting an overview of modern research on the evolution and genetics of entomopathogenic fungi in Chapter One, including their function in the environment, relationship with the insect immune system, and their genetic diversity, among other things. Following this, Manuel Ruiz-Garcia, Nicolas Lichilin-Ortiz, Yolanda Mejia, Juan Manuel Ortega, and Joseph Mark Shostell discuss a study in Chapter Two where it was found that the genetic diversity levels for samples of Eira Barbara were very high. In Chapter Three, Stephen M Modell, Sharon L R Kardia, and Toby Citrin compare and contrast methods of cancer treatment for three cancer types: lung, breast, and colorectal. Anne-Sophie Pezzino, Nathalie Marec-Breton, and Agnes Lacroix review the current research on the neuropsychological profiles of persons with Williams syndrome, focusing on the heterogeneity of the observed profiles, in Chapter Four. In Chapter Five, Chun Kyu Lim presents a study on chromosome rearrangements and preimplantation genetic diagnosis. In conclusion, Chapter Six by Alan Lopez-Lopez, Miriam Margot Rivera-Angles, Carlos Alfonso Tovilla-Zarate, Roberto Molina-Solis, Araceli Valencia-Hernandez, Luis Gomez-Valencia, Thelma Beatriz Gonzalez-Castro, Isela E Juarez-Rojop, Maria Lilia Lopez-Narvaez, Ana Fresan, and Yazmin Hernandez-Diaz attempt to determine a family-based link between three polymorphisms of the brain-derived neurotrophic factor gene and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder in a Tabascan-Mexican population.
Описание: In spite of years of tuition and examination, newly qualified doctors are often left inadequately prepared for real-world clinical practice. The major concern is that `book knowledge` gleaned at medical school does not always translate to safe and effective practical knowhow.

Описание: Viral diseases have an important impact on public health world-wide. New genomic technologies are providing infectious disease scientists with a unique ability to study at the genetic level those viruses that cause disease and the interactions they have with infected hosts. In this book, the authors present new research in viral genomes. Topics include improvements in HSV-1 derived amplicon vectors for gene transfer; viral genome research in papillomavirus; the synthetic synthesis of viral genomes; and a novel bioinformatic method to analyse over 10,000 influenza virus strains simultaneously.

Описание: Advances in Genetics Research. Volume 19 extensively reviews a few important aspects of genetic diversity, including: the importance of genetic diversity in livestock and agriculture, the assessment of different procedures to get a precise measure of genetic diversity, factors affecting genetic diversity, and strategies to prevent such losses. Continuing, this compilation discusses genomic instability, which has been observed in several inherited pathological conditions. Mutations causing the disorder, as well as genomic instability, were present in genes associated to different biochemical functions such as: calcium influx or ionic permeation. The authors discuss short sequence repeats or microsatellite markers, which have been utilized extensively in livestock because they can be easily amplified and possess large amounts of allelic variation at each locus. The authors also explore a new commercially available test that can identify fetal chromosomal abnormalities by analyzing fetal nucleic acids circulating in a maternal blood sample. This test can be done before 10 weeks and can replace traditional first-trimester non-invasive screening. The causes underlying inbreeding depression and heterosis are analyzed, allowing for new insights into these phenomena as the result of a diploid genome structure, creating the states of homozygosity and heterozygosity. The relation of inbreeding depression and heterosis to the major biological processes is demonstrated. The closing study discusses default sex from different points of view, proposing a conception "germ cell-supported female default" in vertebrate gonadal somatic cells, as well as the idea that most vertebrate sex-determining genes emerged as destruction factors against the female default.
