Описание: Interest in the work of Eliza Haywood has increased greatly over the last two decades. Though much scholarship is focused on her `scandalous` early career, this critical edition of The Invisible Spy (1755) adds to the canon of her later, more sophisticated work.

Описание: The Invisible Man stands out as possessing one of the most complicated heroes, or perhaps anti-heroes, inliterature. Griffin is not a naïve dreamer such as Moreau’s Pendick or a hapless victim of circumstanceslike the unnamed narrator of The War of the Worlds. He is a man of great genius and great faults. Perhapsclosest in character to the time traveler, the invisible man wants to the change the world through hisinvention. Griffin’s genius, however, is selfish—no one profits from his experiments, not even himself. Athoroughly unlikeable character defined by impulsiveness, arrogance, rudeness, and, at times, violence,Griffin is a man of the late-nineteenth century—he is a man of the future. The Invisible Man is not only acommentary on the great spirit of invention that elevated the nineteenth century but also a warning againstthe eugenic and self-interested policies that almost destroyed the twentieth century.

Описание: Virginia Woolf and the Modern Sublime argues that Virginia Woolf transformed the sublime experience in her writing to make room for the democratic invention of female genius. From canonical to lesser known works, O`Hara places her ironic novels in the revisionary literary and critical tradition extending from the Elizabethans to the present.

Описание: From her unique standpoint as singer-songwriter-scholar, Polly Paulusma examines the influences of Carter’s 1960s folk singing, unknown until now, on her prose writing. Recent critical attention has focused on Carter’s relationship with folk/fairy tales, but this book uses a newly available archive containing Carter’s folk song notes, books, LPs and recordings to change the debate, proving Carter performed folk songs. Placing this archive alongside the album sleeve notes Carter wrote and her diaries and essays, it reimagines Carter’s prose as a vehicle for the singing voice, and reveals a writing style imbued with ‘songfulness’ informed by her singing praxis.Reading Carter’s texts through songs she knew and sang, this book shows, from influences of rhythm, melodic shape, thematic focus, imagery, ‘voice’ and ‘breath’, how Carter steeped her writing with folk song’s features to produce ‘canorography’: song-infused prose. Concluding with a discussion of Carter’s profound influence on songwriters, focusing on the author's interview with Emily Portman, this book invites us to reimagine Carter’s prose as audial event, dissolving boundaries between prose and song, between text and reader, between word and sound, in an ever-renewing act of sympathetic resonance.

Описание: Sublime Woolf was written in a burst of enthusiasm after the author, Daniel T. O`Hara was finally able to teach Virginia Woolf`s modernist classics again. This book focuses on those uncanny visionary passages when in elaborating `a moment of being,` as Woolf terms it, supplements creatively the imaginative resonance of the scene.

Описание: Containing an urgently needed archival database of historical evidence, this volume includes both a consolidated presentation of the documentary records of black people in Tudor and Stuart England, and an interpretive narrative that confirms and significantly extends the insights of current theoretical excursus on race in early modern England. Here for the first time Imtiaz Habib collects the scattered references to black people-whether from Africa, India or America-in sixteenth- and seventeenth-century England, and arranges them into a systematic, chronological descriptive index. He offers an extended historical and theoretical interpretation of the records in six chapters, which serve as an introductory guide to the index even as they articulate a specific argument about the meaning of the records. Both the archival information and interpretive scholarship provide a strong framework from which future historical debates on race in early modern England can proceed.

Описание: In 1972, Italo Calvino published Invisible Cities, a literary book that masterfully combines philosophy and poetry, rigid structure and free play, theoretical insight and glittering prose. The text is an extended meditation on urban life, and it continues to resonate not only among literary scholars, but among social scientists, architects, and urban planners as well. To commemorate the 50th anniversary of Invisible Cities, this collection of essays serves as both an appreciation and a critical engagement. Drawing from a wide array of disciplinary perspectives and geographical contexts, this volume grapples with the theoretical, pedagogical, and political legacies of Calvino’s work. Each chapter approaches Invisible Cities not only as a novel but as a work of evocative ethnography, place-writing, and urban theory. Fifty years on, what can Calvino’s dreamlike text offer to scholars and practitioners interested in actually existing urban life?

In Wrestling with the Left, Barbara Foley presents a penetrating analysis of the creation of Invisible Man. In the process she sheds new light not only on Ralph Ellison’s celebrated novel but also on his early radicalism and the relationship between African American writers and the left during the early years of the cold war. Foley scrutinized thousands of pages of drafts and notes for the novel, as well as the author’s early journalism and fiction, published and unpublished. While Ellison had cut his ties with the Communist left by the time he began Invisible Man in 1945, Foley argues that it took him nearly seven years to wrestle down his leftist consciousness (and conscience) and produce the carefully patterned cold war text that won the National Book Award in 1953 and has since become a widely taught American classic. She interweaves her account of the novel’s composition with the history of American Communism, linking Ellison’s political and artistic transformations to his distress at the Communists’ wartime policies, his growing embrace of American nationalism, his isolation from radical friends, and his recognition, as the cold war heated up, that an explicitly leftist writer could not expect to have a viable literary career. Foley suggests that by expunging a leftist vision from Invisible Man, Ellison rendered his novel not only less radical but also less humane than it might otherwise have been.
