Описание:

Aleksandr Sukonik never glides on the surface of things; he burrows himself into his subject, digs his own channel in search of the ever elusive truth. He shakes the very foundation of Russian tradition of literary criticism itself. -- Marietta Chudakova, literary critic and historian, doctor of philological sciences, member of Academia Europaea

I believe that Sukonik possesses a rare vision obtained as a result of trying space travel that we in Russia call emigration. Nobody has written on Dostoevsky and Chekhov like this before. -- Sergey Bocharov, literary critic, laureate of New Pushkins and Solzhenitsyns prizes.

Описание: In Russia in the Context of Global Transformations (Capitalism and Communism, Culture and Revolution), the authors focus on the dramatic changes in Russia’s socio-economic system over the past hundred years. The contradictions of Russia’s triumphs and tragedies are studied in connection with the shifts in the world economic system.

Basing themselves on the views of the Post-Soviet School of Critical Marxism, the authors show the causes and consequences of the main shifts in Russia’s development during the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. Topics addressed include the October Revolution, the contradictions of post-revolutionary development, the disintegration of the USSR, the collapse and stagnation during the post-USSR period and the prospects for overcoming contemporary problems.

The Gulag in Writings of Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn and Varlam Shalamov: Memory, History, Testimony

Описание: Alexander Solzhenitsyn and Varlam Shalamov are two of the best-known Gulag writers. After a short period of personal acquaintance, their lives and views on literature took different paths. Solzhenitsyn did not see a literary program in Shalamov’s works, which he describes as “a result of exhaustion after years of hard labour in the camp”. By understanding the text as a “result”, Solzhenitsyn critically touched on a concept of evidence, which Shalamov several times emphasized as important to his own works. According to Shalamov, instead of the text being a re-presentation, it should be an extract from or substitute for the real or the factual, by which his Gulag experience became present once again. Concepts such as “document”, “thing” and “fact” became important for Shalamov’s self-identification as a modernist. At the same time, Solzhenitsyn, viewing his own task as one of restoring historical experiences of the Russian people and trying “to explain the slow course of history and what sort of one it has been”, assumed the dual role of writer and historian, which inevitably raises the question of what characterizes the borders between fact and fiction in his works. It also raises question about dichotomies of historical and fictional truth.

Описание:

“Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn delineates his idyllic time in rural Vermont, where he had the freedom to work, spend time with his family, and wage a war of ideas against the Soviet Union and other detractors from afar. At his quiet retreat . . . the Nobel laureate found . . . ‘a happiness in free and uninterrupted work.’” —Kirkus Reviews

This compelling account concludes Nobel Prize–winner Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn’s literary memoirs of his years in the West after his forced exile from the USSR following the publication of The Gulag Archipelago. The book reflects both the pain of separation from his Russian homeland and the chasm of miscomprehension between him and Western opinion makers. In Between Two Millstones, Solzhenitsyn likens his position to that of a grain that becomes lodged between two massive stones, each grinding away—the Soviet Communist power with its propaganda machine on the one hand and the Western establishment with its mainstream media on the other.

Book 2 picks up the story of Solzhenitsyn’s remarkable life after the raucous publicity over his 1978 Harvard Address has died down. The author parries attacks from the Soviet state (and its many fellow-travelers in the Western press) as well as from recent ?migr?s who, according to Solzhenitsyn, defame Russian culture, history, and religion. He shares his unvarnished view of several infamous episodes, such as a sabotaged meeting with Ronald Reagan, aborted Senate hearings regarding Radio Liberty, and Gorbachev’s protracted refusal to allow The Gulag Archipelago to be published back home. There is also a captivating chapter detailing his trips to Japan, Taiwan, and Great Britain, including meetings with Margaret Thatcher and Prince Charles and Princess Diana. Meanwhile, the central themes of Book 1 course through this volume, too—the immense artistic quandary of fashioning The Red Wheel, staunch Western hostility to the historical and future Russia (and how much can, or should, the author do about it), and the challenges of raising his three sons in the language and spirit of Russia while cut off from the homeland in a remote corner of rural New England. The book concludes in 1994, as Solzhenitsyn bids farewell to the West in a valedictory series of speeches and meetings with world leaders, including John Paul II, and prepares at last to return home with his beloved wife Natalia, full of misgivings about what use he can be in the first chaotic years of post-Communist Russia, but never wavering in his conviction that, in the long run, his books would speak, influence, and convince. This vibrant, faithful, and long-awaited first English translation of Between Two Millstones, Book 2, will fascinate Solzhenitsyn's many admirers, as well as those interested in twentieth-century history, Russian history, and literature in general.

Описание:

1st English translation: "Russian Religious Philosophy", a series of lectures by the noted Russian Orthodox priest, Fr. Aleksandr Men' (1935-1990), shares insights and details into the lives and thought of some major Russian philosophic figures, Soviet era former "forbidden authors", significant names just then beginning to be repatriated and published in Russia. Fr Men' was able to lecture openly, he even spoke on Russian television during these final Soviet years -- it was the hopeful "Gorbachev era", a time of "perestroika" (restructuring) and "glasnost'" (openness), even regarding religious renewal.

These Lectures discuss a series of seminal Russian religio-philosophic figures and events: Vl. Solov'ev, S, N. & E. N. Trubetskoy, L. Tolstoy, D. S. Merezhkovsky & Z. Gippius, N. A. Berdyaev, the priests S. Bulgakov & P. Florensky, S. L. Frank, G. P. Fedotov, Mother Maria (Skobtsova) -- most in exile abroad, some perishing tragically. Personal details of Fr. Men's own life are interwoven with some of these figures.

The modern reader, both the general reader and the specialist, can find much of value and intellectually enriching in this text. The search for the meaning of life and the philosophic love of truth have never gone out of fashion...

These Lectures, along with much else, were later transcribed by the "Aleksandr Men' Fond" in Moscow. The final Lecture was on "Mother Maria Skobtsova", who perished in Ravensbrueck Nazi concentration camp. One mere week later, on 9 Sept. 1990, Fr. Aleksandr Men' was himself brutally murdered, a crime never since solved nor perpetrator found.

The publication of this text is intended to serve both in respectful tribute to his profound legacy, and in 25th Year Commemoration of the Memory of Fr. Aleksandr Men'
