Описание:
Challenging students to think critically about the complex web of social forces that leads to health disparities in the United States.
The health care system in the United States has been called the best in the world. Yet wide disparities persist between social groups, and many Americans suffer from poorer health than people in other developed countries. In this revised edition of Health Disparities in the United States, Donald A. Barr provides extensive new data about the ways low socioeconomic status, race, and ethnicity interact to create and perpetuate these health disparities. Examining the significance of this gulf for the medical community and society at large, Barr offers potential policy- and physician-based solutions for reducing health inequity in the long term.
This thoroughly updated edition focuses on a new challenge the United States last experienced more than half a century ago: successive years of declining life expectancy. Barr addresses the causes of this decline, including what are commonly referred to as deaths of despair--from opiate overdose or suicide. Exploring the growing role geography plays in health disparities, Barr asks why people living in rural areas suffer the greatest increases in these deaths. He also analyzes recent changes under the Affordable Care Act and considers the literature on how race and ethnicity affect the way health care providers evaluate and treat patients.
As both a physician and a sociologist, Barr is uniquely positioned to offer rigorous medical explanations alongside sociological analysis. An essential text for courses in public health, health policy, and sociology, this compelling book is a vital teaching tool and a comprehensive reference for social science and medical professionals.

Our children are our future. We count down the months and weeks to the happy event of their birth. When they are born we are overwhelmed with a flood of emotions: relief, contentment, pride, love and joy. We are excited about what their future may hold. However, our baby was born with many challenges; he was a 'hospital baby'. We were unprepared for this, but after the initial shock we dealt with our fears for his future. We learned to overlook and overcome many of Leigh's physical limitations: this beautiful baby boy was a gift to us. Leigh grew up to become a soft-spoken, gentle man and a caring and compassionate son. His life journey demanded immense courage and resilience to handle its many setbacks head-on. As a child, his dream was to be 'just like the other kids' go to school, get a job, drive a car and live an independent life. But along the way he had to endure endless surgeries and appointments, learn to use mobility and breathing devices, and cope with discrimination and hospital shortfalls. He never ceased to amaze us. This book is also about dedication to better patient care. When a patient is admitted to hospital, part of their clinical assessment may include a Resuscitation Plan. This is an official medical form regarding what should be done in case of resuscitation. It outlines broadly defined decisions as to desired outcomes, detailed treatment options and their limitations. My aim is to ensure everyone knows about this form and fully understands its implications. Inadvertently, Leigh played a pivotal role in this quest. As a direct result of his experiences within the hospital system, changes were made to the Consensus Resuscitation Plan and the accompanying information sheet on CPR, used by two major hospitals. This is the story of Leigh's fight for life.
Leigh, My Amazing Son is a revealing and evocative story sharing personal insight into the arduous journey of a man with a severe disability and his mother/carer. If you are living with a disability, are a carer, or simply someone who has compassion for others, you will most certainly feel a strong connection to many of the events described in this book.
Inspired by the June 2020 demonstrations and riots in America and in other parts of the world, which were triggered by the murder of George Floyd in Minneapolis, this volume compares the upheaval of the Arab minority in Israel and its claims of "racism" and "discrimination" with the plight of the African Americans in the U.S.
The history of Black Power and the Nation of Islam militant activism in America claims that the present conflict between Blacks and whites, which has existed for four centuries, cannot be quelled by human rights demonstrations (peaceful and violent), or legislative measures.
Since the 1930s, leaders of Black Power have floated the idea of Black territoriality and sovereignty, self-rule, and independence from white rule as the only way to restore Black dignity and self-confidence.
It has been suggested, following the failure of all other solutions after the end of the Civil War, to assign Blacks a section of American soil where they can constitute the largest Black population, and be allowed, with federal assistance and funding, to move freely into and out of this chosen territory, until a Black majority state within the Union affords them the opportunity to practice self-rule.
